Why is humanity so divided in society today? This doesn't always happen because of hatred, most of the time the division is because of small differences. Eventually so many people decide to choose a side it forms social groups and creates social classes which separate people. The young adult fiction novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton exhibits this very well with the Greasers and the Socials hating each other because of their minor differences. The Greasers being from the East side of Tulsa Oklahoma, “means” that they are lower class and not as cool. The Greasers only problem isn't just money, one of the bigger problems is also finding a home or education. The Greasers drank alcohol to help them calm down, most of them also smoked cigarettes. Greasers also had very different physical features. For example a lot of the Greasers had long dirty hair because hair was like their prize possession. They also wore white tee-shirts and leather jackets which wasn't considered very nice clothes back in their time. Greasers put hard work and sweat into making money, while the Socs either steal money or are gifted money. Something that Ponyboy said about Greasers was “We're poorer than the Socs and the middle class”(3). The Greasers carried hair grease on them at all times so they can keep their hair slick back wherever they go. Most of the Greasers also carried a switchblade on them or some type of weapon. They carried some kind of weapon on them just in case the Socs jump them with a knife because that's what they like to do. They do not just carry weapons because of greaser, since they live in a very poor place it isn't very safe to go out so they carry a knife in case they need to get away from someone. The Socs need to carry switchblades as much as Greasers because they live in a very safe part of town. Other than a pack of smokes and maybe a switchblade the Socs didn't really carry much. The Socs do some pretty hoodlum activities “Socs, who jump Greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next” (3).
