Activism: the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change (Oxford University Press). When most think of activist organizations they neglect to think of the campaigning aspect of the activism. Most will think of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the Tibetan Monks sacrificing their lives by self-immolation, or the hundreds that camped out on Wall Street in protest of the one percent’s control of the wealth in the United States. Activist took those three historical events and made them into movements that have had historical impacts on social and political beliefs. The ONE campaign is an international advocacy organization to end extreme poverty and preventable diseases, focusing primarily in the countries of Africa. The organization was founded in 2004 by prominent member of society such as Bono, lead singer of U2 (ONE). ONE also works hand in hand with the Bill & Melinda Fates Foundation receiving an initial donation of three million dollars (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation). This organization has support from very influential members of our society, and with their help ONE is able to obtain their objectives of raising public awareness and work with political leaders to combat issues that they feel is detrimental to the world. The ONE Campaign has eleven issues that they are there primary focus to help improve the quality of the people of earth: infectious diseases, agriculture, transparency, energy, development assistance, maternal and child health, water and sanitation, debt cancellation, education, trade and investment, and millennium development goals. Kairos by definition means a favorable moment for a decision or action (Oxford University Press). This holds true to the actions that the ONE Campaign utilizes for their activism. This style of activism that ONE uses is unique to the age we live in today, there concept to rally people to lobby on their behalf is entirely based on their social media presence. It is how they inform the masses of the issues that the world needs to address and how they have the masses lobby policymakers to insure proper funding is continued to the reach the projects that are need to help impoverished nations and communities. Analyzing the audience in which the ONE Campaign presents to, the audience are those who want to improve society, specifically ones that have a large social media presence. This then turns the concerned members of society on social media into the ones persuading policymakers to insure funding. These actions that the ONE Campaign makes causes policymakers to listen because policymakers are supposed to listen and act upon the concern of their constituencies. Upon analyzing the ONE Campaign’s rhetorical appeals, they persuade their audience utilizing all three means of persuasion, pathos, ethos, and logos.
