“Goodwill works to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work”. (Goodwill Industries International, Inc." 2009. 12 May. 2014)
Goodwill is a not-for-profit organization, continually recognized by Forbes magazine for being one of America's 25 most inspiring companies by consumers. This is no surprise since Goodwill has been serving communities and changing lives since it was founded in 1902 by Rev. Edgar Helms. The Goodwill Industries was formally know as the Morgan Memorial which begun as an outreach program in the south side of Boston Massachusetts. The outreach program was created when Rev. Edgar Helms was appalled by the conditions immigrants faced during the great depression. Rev. Edgar Helms and his church members collected clothing and household goods from wealthier citizens of Boston to give to the poor throughout the community. What began as a charity mission turned into a program to hire the needy and train them to refurbish donated goods.Goodwill today continues to do his work and has employed more than 216,000 people in the United States, Canada and the involvement in 14 countries that include Finland, the philippines, and Venezuela. The mission of the Goodwill locally and internationally incorporates the same philosophy of Rev. Edgar Helms, “People deserve to be able to work. People need a chance, not charity," (Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries - History." 2010. 12 May) Goodwills mission is to enhance the quality of life through the power of work-Goodwill is here to help through public donations. Goodwill International is a not-for-profit organization whose main objective is to offer job trainings, employment placements, and other community-based projects to individuals with disabilities. The organization also extends its services to veterans who include people who lack the necessary job experience, education, or face challenges in securing employment. The non-profit organization is financed by a chain of retail thrift stores, which also operate as not-for-profit entities in places where they are situated. Goodwill is constituted by a system of 165 community based independent organizations operating in 15 countries, including the United States, Brazil, Venezuela, Uruguay, Panama, and Canada among others. The organization uses the most part of its revenues to provide training, employment, and other relevant support to its dependants who are currently more than 6 million. This paper assesses Goodwill International based on key concepts such as volunteerism, accountability, strategic planning, and fundraising in relation to its mission, vision, and purpose. Helping people is one of the things I was brought up learning form my parents. United Way is one of the many charities that help people. Being the 1st largest charity in the U.S. United Way helps people in need. United Way is a nonprofit organization that helps 50 million families a year. They have 1800 offices in 45 different countries helping communities with their schools, government agencies, and many more.
The organisation that I have chosen to research is Caritas Australia. It is a non-profit international aid and development agency of the Catholic Church in Australia. Their motto is to help “end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity” for the poor so they won’t need to rely on charities anymore. Furthermore, the international symbol of Caritas is a flaming cross which represents Christ’s burning love for his people.
When deciding on which non-profit organization to give resources to, a person must think of a number of questions that need to be answered in which to choose a certain one. The most pertinent of these questions is the one that asks which cause the person cares about the most. The problem, for a majority of the population, is that they just do not know what they truly care about. That is why the United Way is the best option for donations. The United way does not focus on one specific, but instead works for a variety of different causes focused on fixing some of the different problems inside of the United States. The United Way is an organization, which envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives. It plans to do this by improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. The United Way needs money and time in order to achieve some of these goals. This essay will explain why the United Way is the best organization to give ones resources to.
We’ve all heard the phrase “Charity begins at home.” This statement holds very true in my case, not because we needed help but rather because we were taught at an early age to provide help whenever possible. In our current economy there are many people not just in our community but throughout the world and beyond that are struggling. I was fortunate to grow up in a household with two loving parents who shared the importance of fundamental beliefs and values. Cynthia Street, the street I grew up on, was a comfortable middle class neighborhood that served as my first perspective of American life. Through my experiences in my neighborhood and also my interaction with my church family at Central Christian Church in Newark, I learned the importance of outreach work.
The charitable wing of the Humana organization was founded to “support charitable organizations and institutions that promote education, health and human services, community development and the arts.” While the group believes that these endeavors are indeed noble, Humana can not make up for a poor ethical foundation by throwing money at the problem.
Goodwill was first founded in 1902 in Boston by a Methodist minister, Rev. Edgar J. Helms (Goodwill, 2015). He collected used goods and clothes from the wealthy areas around the city and hired the underprivileged to restore and repair the used items (Goodwill, 2015). The restored goods were then sold or donated to the poor workers who mended them (Goodwill, 2015). This was the foundation of today 's $4 billion nonprofit of the Goodwill Industries that is responsible for providing training and rehabilitation for people with limited access to employment (Goodwill, 2015). Henceforth, the mission of the Goodwill industries of South Central California (GISCC) was established.
The non-charitable organisations objective embedded within its mission statement is to work with all its partners towards the attainment of the sustainable human development goals adopted by the world community and the realisation of the vision of peace and social progress enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. UNICEF was created with the purpose of working with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path, thus advancing the cause of humanity.

As an intern at Goodwill Industries, I am a part of the resource center as a resource service assistant. I have several task right now until the second week of March. The position that I hold now ties into the other areas at Goodwill. I help clients with their computer skills. Many times people have come into the resource center and are experiencing being on the computer for the first time, some have taken the basic computer class at Goodwill, yet are not comfortable making a cover letter or resume. I help them in these areas. I also help them with email set up and sometimes I am there to listen to them tell their stories.

The FAS has made changes throughout the years in the way to account for goodwill. Goodwill is when a company attempts to merge with another company to obtain the valuable intangible assets. These assets are anything that can 't be seen or touched. Valuable intangibles can be anything like a company name because it is well known. Many times companies will decide to merge because it can be beneficial to them to merge with well-known entities. This can also be less costly and less time-consuming versus building a brand new business on its own. On many occasions, gooodwill is amortized on accounting records. Amortization is not the most favorable approach for companies who are trying to attract investors. This because when amortization is not present in the books, it means that there aren 't high physical cash profits for shareholders.
