The Global GMO Market: Development And Control Of The Market

1179 Words3 Pages

Introduction The global GMO market is on its way towards heavy monopolisation by a single company; however this may not be an entirely bad thing. A global monopolisation would make it a lot easier to regulate the development and usage of genetically modified organisms in order to ensure maximum safety. This could prevent adverse health effects of untested products. There are also negative impacts of monopolisation, in that it could reduce availability of the product whilst simultaneously increasing the pricing. There are many positives sides to GMOs, so increased availability could potentially save the lives of large amounts of people and increase quality of life for many more. Some examples include disease resistance in cotton, extra nutrients …show more content…

This regulation would include the appropriate distribution of the products as well as the scientific research and testing. Heavier regulation could lead to an increase in the safety of the product by ensuring that there is adequate testing done. Not only would this allow for a reduction of potential health implications, but also environmental impacts. Transgene escape, or unintended hybridisation of GMO plants and wild variants, could pose environmental risks such as the transferral of pest herbicide resistance to weeds could make them more difficult to control (Buiatti 2013). With more focused regulation around the research of potential GMO risks, the negative effects could be …show more content…

With GMOs this would also extend to any organisation trying to research and develop new or improved transgenic crops. This could potentially put an end to much of the scientific research around transgenic crops that aren’t funded by the monopolising company, thus limiting private research availability. This would reduce the number of jobs available in the field of plant modification, thus leading to an overall decline in research in the area. Having many different companies, both private and government funded would allow for a larger amount of research and development to occur at any one time. This would also lead to an increase in job
