The characters of The Glass Menagerie all achieve varying degrees of success in achieving the dream referred to in the quote by Ruby Dee. The dreams alluded to include prosperity, having the ability to do as you please, and happiness, which can all be considered aspects of the American Dream. The play follows the Wingfield family, who all dream of different things. Jim O’Connor, who the Wingfield’s invited over for dinner, exemplifies the American Dream. He consistently works hard to become better and more successful. Tom is the only person in the play to, for the most part, achieve his dreams of escaping his life and traveling to different places. In Ruby Dee’s quote, the dreams she refers include prosperity, the ability to do as you please, and happiness. The characters in the play all want to obtain prosperity. They want to be well-off enough to not have to worry about every object they spend their money on. Amanda wants Tom to get a better job, so he can better provide for their family. Tom and Laura best exemplify the dream of being able to do what one pleases. While Tom wants to escape from the warehouse and household, Laura desires the ability to do as she pleases without her mother interfering. Also, all of the characters want to be happy.
