Imagine living in society with no differences or pain, but with no color or feelings. In The Giver by Lois Lowry a place just like like this exists and it’s a Utopian society in which the main character, an 11 year old boy named Jonas is part of. The society Jonas is living in may seem favorable with no pain, but as a result of getting rid of pain goods things were removed such as climate, color, and feelings. Jonas changes throughout The Giver and as a result, tries to change the community.

Jonas changes from the beginning of the the book to the end of the book in many ways. One example of Jonas changing is in the beginning of the book when he was honest. Jonas began to lie throughout the book and was no longer honest. “ Jonas has, …show more content…

One example of Jonas changes in the story is when he was obedient. In the beginning of the book Jonas was obedient because he followed the community’s rules and obeyed his elders. “He paused. He knew he had to tell it all, that it was not only right but necessary to tell all of a dream.” page. 45. This means Jonas knew that not telling the whole dream was against the rules of dream telling, so Jonas told the entire dream. Towards the end of the book Jonas become rebellious. “He thought of the rules he had broken so far: enough that if he were caught now, he would be condemned. First, he had left the dwelling at night. A major transgression. Second he had robbed the community of food. Third, he had stolen his father’s bicycle.” This means Jonas has broken many rules in order to escape the community making him a fugitive. Jonas changes the community for two reasons. One reason is to help himself and the other reason is to help the community. Jonas helps change the community by making an escape plan so he could leave the community. As a result of escaping the community Jonas would release the memories he was given throughout his lessons to the community. Giving the memories to the community would mean he would be giving them feelings and memories of differences, war, etc., which they don’t have. By leaving the community Jonas helps himself because he escapes the community so he could experience more feelings and live in a society that has differences, no climate control, and color.
