The Giver was written by Lois Lowry and published by Houghton Mifflin Company Boston. The genre of this story is fantasy. Jonas is an eleven year old boy who lives somewhere in the future. The society that he lives in is very structured, they do not have any emotions and everything is decided by people called “The Elders”, from their children to their careers to even their names. Everyone in this society is basically all the same. Age is very important in this society, every December all the children are advance to the next age. Jonas is turning twelve, and during the twelfth year all the children become legal adults who are also chosen a job by “The Elders”. Jonas is eleven years old and basically looks the same as everyone else ( There is not much information on how to others look like.), accept for his eyes they are an usual light grey colour ( Everyone else has dark grey eyes ). Jonas really loves the thought of freedom of choice. He desires love as well as other emotions. Jonas is very curious, he enjoys discovering the new memories during his training. Jonas’s role in the story is to protect the memories, he is “The receiver”. However Jonas has lots for trouble doing that.

The story takes place in a “Utopian” community, somewhere deep into the future. The book seems to take place on earth but it is not specified. All throughout the year it is summer.

Based on the book the most important part was when Jonas had his first day of training and he got to experience his first emotions, surprised and excitement. “He was free to enjoy the breathless glee that overwhelmed him: the speed, the clear cold air, the total silence, the feeling of balance and excitement and peace.”(Chapter 11, P. 82) I think that this part was very important because finally understanding his first emotions plays a big role in the story, he could know realize how important his job was and that will help hime to try and show the rest of the
