According to Hannah Bailey, the writer of the magazine New Moon, “many scary stories have historical roots” (29). The story of Bloody Mary has several different origins. Several assume the ghost Bloody Mary is the ghost of the tyrant blood thirsty sister of Elizabeth the First. Others believe Bloody Mary is the ghost of Mary Worth, who supposedly kidnapped slaves who were on the run and performed cruel rituals on them. Legend says she was burned to death by the other villagers. Several declared they have seen a ghost manifest themselves in front of them. An article written by Lauren Honeycutt interviewed several college campuses in Alabama who have rankings on the electromagnetic meter. While visiting Willingham Hall, she interviewed one of the English instructors, Stephen Melvin, who said that he “saw the reflection of [the ghost] completely translucent from head to toe” (1). People will assume the apparition is part of the instructor’s imagination, but another professor also witnessed the same ghost appear in the Willingham Hall before. While two people may think alike, they do not have same inventiveness. Celebrities such as Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, and Emma Stone also had an experience with different ghosts. Their experiences happened at different times in their lives, but the result of their ghost encounters changed each of their beliefs in ghost. Since I come from the Eastern Shore of this state, I was surprised to hear a ghost story I was previously unaware of. The story takes place in a park in Salisbury. The person who told me the story is a 19-year-old sophomore at the University, and we spoke about it one evening after dinner. He believes it to be true, because one of his friend’s siblings has apparently experienced the ghost firsthand. I tape-recorded his narrative:
One of my personal favorites is the ghost of Wood Hall. This apparition takes on the image of a little boy. Numbers of Wood Hall girls have seen him. Erica Gray and roommate Ashli Webster deal with this ghost all the time. When asked about the paranormal occurrences in their room, Erica said, "Pretty much every night, he flicks the channels on the TV and turns the lights on and off. Every once in a while he types random shit on the computer... I don't care though as long as he doesn't try to rape me or something. [laughter]" They aren't the only ones who have seen this little boy. I've even had my own instances of cold chills in my 75-degree room, flickering lights, and even a quick glimpse of a child standing at the end of a dark hallway at 3 in the morning.

The story of Bloody Mary is a very extensive urban legend. Bloody Mary is one of many names that can be chanted to summon this ghost. Snopes.com lists that “Bloody Mary, Bloody Bones, Hell Mary, Mary Worth, Mary Worthington, Mary Whales, Mary Johnson, Mary Lou, Mary Jane, Sally, Kathy, Agnes, Black Agnes, Aggie, Svarte Madame” are all names that have been used in the retelling of this story. With an increased number of retellings comes an increase in the variation between individual stories. The version of the story told to me did not include Bloody Mary punishing the one that summoned her. Versions in which the summoner is punished describe a wide variety of fates.. Snopes.com lists that Bloody Mary “May strike her summoner dead, drive her mad, or fiercely scratch her face. She may merely peer malevolently out through the mirror, or she may drag one of the girls back through it to live with her.” This legend has several other deviations; such as the number of times you have to say the name of the spirit, and the room in which you perform the ritual.
Nicknames are generally defined as subterfuge given to a person to better understand their personalities. In order to understand whether Queen Mary deserves her nickname we must first look at her history. Mary I of England was born on February 18th 1516. She was the only surviving child of Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Due to her gender and her mother’s incapability to produce a male heir, they were both cast away. It was after the death of Edward VI in which Mary made a bid for her birthright as heir to the throne. Edward VI and his council intended for his cousin Lady Jane Grey to succeed him because of her protestant faith. However, after only nine days Jane Grey was dethroned by Mary by popular support. During her reign of 5 years, Queen Mary I went to drastic measures to return England to the Roman Catholic faith. Her attempts however were short-lived as they were quickly reversed by her successor and half-sister, Queen Elizabeth I. It was also during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I that Queen Mary I was unfairly given the nickname, Bloody Queen Mary. Therefore Queen Mary did not deserve this nickname because it was a bias depiction of her through the eyes of Queen Elizabeth the protestant who later succeeded her, the 16th century (during her reign) was essentially a brutal time and thus actions should not be highlighted as brutal because of her violent surroundings and due to her gender, Mary had to be brutal in order to maintain respect.

This urban legend was told by a nineteen year old woman at the University of Maryland who is originally from West Point, New York. She is currently a sophomore majoring in architecture. On the night of March 30, 2007, a group of friends and I got together in the 4th floor lounge of LaPlata. In the midst of discussion, the topic of scary stories came up, and at about midnight, the storyteller started telling her version of “Bloody Mary.” She paused for a moment and started talking about the origins of the urban legend. She said that “Bloody Mary” is a reference to Mary Queen of Scots, a Scottish monarch. Apparently, Mary Queen of Scots would bathe in the blood of virgins in order to look young and vibrant. The storyteller said that virgins were viewed as being pure, so exposure to their blood would make an individual look beautiful. The storyteller paused and said, “Now it’s time to get to the good part.” She said that an individual needs a candle, a lighter, a dark room, and a mirror. An individual would take the unlit candle and put it in front of the mirror with the lighter in his or her hand. The individual would spin around while chanting “Bloody Mary” seven times. As soon as he or she finished, the individual would immediately turn to the mirror and light the candle. After the candle is lit, a figure with a bloody face would appear in the mirror and kill the individual! As we all looked in awe, I asked her if she ever tried it, and she said that she was never able to do it because she was too frightened. Even though many of her friends did it and came out alive, the storyteller said that she could never have the courage to do it because it was too scary for her.

The Nelly Butler hauntings is referred to as the first recorded ghost story in American history (LiBrizzi 5), and possibly the most exciting hauntings to date as there are still many unsolved mysteries. The apparition appeared on more than 30 separate occasions to over 100 witnesses in Sullivan, Maine, just over fifteen years after the American Revolution (5-6). Although the Nelly Butler apparition is one of the most convincing ghosts of all time, it was subject to suspicions of fraud. These claims turn out to be groundless as the evidence reveals the ghost to be genuine.

Ghosts have been around for many years and the root of the whole idea comes because it is “based on the ancient idea that a person's spirit exists separately from his or her body, and may continue to exist after that person dies” (“History of Ghost Stories”). Ghost stories have been told through centuries and because of this it is not known where the first spirit could have appeared or why, but one of the first actually recorded experience happened within the first century A.D. A man named Pliney recorded that he had seen a man and heard objects moving around and he could not explain what what happening (“History of Ghost Stories”). Even though the first supernatural experiences are not known, they created worldwide talk to present time about spirits and hauntings.
