In addition to genres making slow, gradual shifts in their course of development, the invention of new, useful technologies abruptly altered and almost completely transformed many genres and their sounds. Although new and innovative technology has always influenced the speed at which music advances, only recently has technology so abruptly made such an imprint on music and its quality. The use of devices such as turntables and synthesizers brought about the genre of Electronic music, which is specifically characterized by experimentation with devices that affect the pitch, tempo, and tone of instruments and vocals and a very futuristic, up-beat vibe. Essentially, this means that the genre loses most of what makes other genres soulful and personal. According to Adam Hadhazy at LiveScience, Auto-Tune, which works by adjusts and corrects a singer’s pitch, making his or her voice smoother, while still maintaining the natural sound, provides singers with a choice between developing a talent that can take years to perfect and taking the easy route to success in music, by allowing technology to compensate for what they lack in skill. Put simply, anyone who can carry a tune can sound nearly perfect with the help of this technology. While past genres featured intricate vocals and instrumental woven together with care by a talented artist, newer genres do not require this time-consuming process as there is technology that will do the work. Alternately, Auto-Tune can serve the purpose of giving singers a “digitized,” almost inhuman sound by making the correction to pitch very quickly, rather than gradually and smoothly (Hadhazy). This shatters the mold of traditional music.

Swearing has the ability to get someone in a whole load of trouble at the dinner table with their mother but could also be their choice of words when they accidently stub their toe on the coffee table in the living room. Natalie Angier discusses this controversial topic of words that shouldn’t be said in her article feature in The New York Times, “Almost Before We Spoke, We Swore”. Provoked by a recently proposed bill to increase fines for using swear words on television, Angier analyzes not only the impact of swearing, but also where the desire to speak obscene words comes from. She references many credible studies and sources as she unfolds her argument. She uses a diverse slew of studies, experiments, and famous pieces of literature and
The Beatles and the Beach Boys are two of the most recognized, well-known and most popular musical acts of the 1960’s right through to the 1970’s. I will be focusing on the group acts rather than solo performers such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison of the Beatles, who took their own stylistic approach to their music after the Beatles’ separation. Each group’s arrangement and use of instruments classify them as part of the overall associated sound and typical subject matter of songs in the 1960’s, yet remain different enough to distinguish between each group’s desired sound.
Hip hop is both a culture and a lifestyle. As a musical genre it is characterized by its hard hitting beats and rhythms and expressive spoken word lyrics that address topics ranging from economic disparity and inequality, to gun violence and gang affiliated activity. Though the genre emerged with greater popularity in the 1970’s, the musical elements involved and utilized have been around for many years. In this paper, we will cover the history and

Throughout American history there has always been some form of verbal acrobatics or jousting involving rhymes within the Afro-American community. Signifying, testifying, shining of the Titanic, the Dozens, school yard rhymes, prison ?jail house? rhymes and double Dutch jump rope rhymes, are some of the names and ways that various forms of raps have manifested. Modern day rap music finds its immediate roots in the toasting and dub talk over elements of reggae music (George, 1998)....

In the late 1970’s hip-hop/rap music emerged as one of the most popular musical genres, and it remains as one to this day. However, there is a big difference in the content of a song like Sugar Hill Gang’s 1978 single “Rappers Delight” and a modern day rap song. When hip-hop music first began it served as a type of party music that was made primarily from African American men. The music quickly gained popularity, and before long, members of all races were enjoying it. However, in the early 1980’s hip-hop music became more of a mirror into ghetto culture rather than just upbeat enjoyable music. Rappers began to write edgy lyrics celebrating street warfare, drugs, and promiscuity. Unfortunately this style of hip-hop never died off, and now it

The popularity of the Beatles proves time and time again to be nothing short of eternal. Like any great works of art, the Beatles’ records carried and still do carry an ageless brilliance that continues to captivate new generations of listeners. Their records are still heard heavily today on the radio, continue to sell in immense quantities, and are forever remembered through the covers done by pop and rock artists in present day.
Profanity in pop music has become a major burden on today’s society and is negatively affecting the behavior of the listeners. It does not have a positive message and it tells the listener that doing the wrong ok. It contradicts what the Bible says.
