The GEN/201 Foundations for University Success course sets us up for academic success by introducing us to the issues and the resources to overcome them in order to reach our academic goals. Thousands research studies are performed on how to get students to succeed academically “A common thread appearing in each of these large reviews is the importance of three critical skills sets known to contribute to student academic success and social competence: (a) cognitive and metacognitive skills such as goal setting, progress monitoring, and memory skills; (b) social skills such as interpersonal skills, social problem solving, listening, and teamwork skills; and (c) self-management skills such as managing attention, motivation, and anger.” (Carey, …show more content…

This is important that week one starts out with these key concepts, they allow students to start out with the baseline knowledge they will need to effectively absorb the future information. That is why this week is a great time to focus on developing cognitive and metacognitive skills, specifically goal setting. If a student does not understand their personal learning skill they may struggle to grasp the concepts that affect their future academic success, such as setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely) goals. By teaching the resource of SMART goals and how their uses can make academic and career goals more attainable this course minimizes the chance of student failure in reaching their goals. With regard to this an example of a SMART academic goal is my goal of getting 24 transfer credits (specific and achievable) in order to transfer to OSU 's nuclear engineering and radiation health physics bachelors program (measurable) when I get out of the military in September of 2016 (Timely). In addition, this goal is relevant because without the 24 transfer credits I will not be able to get into OSU. Therefore, I would be unable to reach my career goal of getting a supervisor position at a power plant since I would still be missing the academic requirement of a degree that pairs with the skills I already
