GAP.Ý It’s on every third glass window that covers the front of the store.Ý The windows display large posters and body forms, not mannequins because they don’t have heads, hands, or feet.Ý They wear the latest items to arrive in the store, and look impeccable most of the time, because most of the time I dress them.Ý The tiled floor between the glass doors gives way to a scratched and scuffed hard wood floor in desperate need of a wax and buff.Ý The dust bunnies that seem to breed and quickly distribute themselves until they are under every fixture and on top of every shelf must first be exterminated.Ý The lighting is a combination of muted fluorescent in the middle with focused spotlights on the items toward the outside of the store.Ý I can catch a whiff of wool, or leather every so often, but usually my nose is polluted with Dream, Heaven, and Blue, constantly sprayed by customers testing it.Ý Just smell the bottle, ok?Ý Music is always pumping out of the speakers from a tape that is sent to us from the corporate office.Ý Sometimes the songs are danceable, sometimes not, but the volume is always loud enough so that you can listen to it if you get bored, but still hold a conversation over it.Ý Conversations that often times occur between employees themselves.Ý I’m not big on the conversing side of it.Ý I listen to the music, thinking about what I really want to be doing right now.Ý Do I want to fold this sweatshirt?Ý Do I want to look for another size?Ý No I want to put my tongue piercing back in and dance around the store busting a move for all the world to see.Ý I can’t do that.Ý I have to obey the corporate law because I’m on “Gap Time.”ÝÝÝ Women’s items are on the left side, men’s on the right.Ý Each is divided further into four sections: sections one two and three, and the denim section.Ý They all have themes.Ý Section one is usually seasonally casual; currently it’s filled with sweaters and wool pants, scarves, hats and mittens.Ý Section two has all the khakis; it’s sometimes the Gap at Work section, or the Smart and Snappy section.Ý Right now Women’s Two is filled with velvet pants, silk shirts, tuxedo skirts and pants, button up shirts, and turtleneck sweaters in merino wool.
(The retail industry main aspect includes small stores that sell products directly to consumers. Mike took over the lease of a building and wanted to transform it into a fully functional department store that offered a variety of products.)
Walmart is one of the well-known children’s toy store in the United States and so, I decided to visit the store nearby my house on Davis Street in San Leandro. The store was pretty clean and less busy during the day. This Walmart is vastly huge; perhaps the reason they placed large department and gender signs over the aisles so these would help shoppers easily locate and get the items they are looking for. As a matter of fact, these department signs (e.g. Baby and Toys) and gender signs (e.g. Girls and Boys) helped me find the toy department quickly.
The achievement gap is defined as the disparity between the performance groups of students, especially groups defined by gender, race/ethnicity, ability and socio-economic status. The achievement gap can be observed through a variety of measures including standardized test scores, grade point averages, drop out rates, college enrollment and completion rates. The Black-White achievement gap is a critical issue in modern society’s education system. Although data surrounding the issue clearly indicates that the racial performance gap exists in areas of standardized tests, graduation rates, dropout rates, and enrollment in continuing education, the causative reasons for the gap are ambiguous—therefore presenting a significant challenge in regard to the most effective way to close the gap. The gap appears before children enter kindergarten and it persists into adulthood (Jencks 1998). Since 1970, the gap has decreased about 40 percent, but has steadily grown since. Theories suggest the Black-White achievement gap is created by a multitude of social, cultural, and economic factors as well as educational opportunities and/or learning experiences. Factors such as biased testing, discrimination by teachers, test anxiety among black students, disparities between blacks and whites in income or family structure, and genetic and cultural differences between blacks and whites have all been evaluated as explanations for the Black-White achievement gap (Farkas 2004). The research that follows will elaborate on these factors as they affect the decline in academic performance of black males—particularly the literacy achievement of black males.
“The Corner Store” by Eudora Welty, Welty is very descriptive when discussing the store that was in her hometown. Throughout the essay, she creates a dominant impression by her use of sensory details such as touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. Welty attempts to create a description of the store that demonstrates a friendly old fashion atmosphere which in paragraph eight she expresses with the use of the sensory detail sight. The author uses the sensory detail sight when she describes the store in great detail. For example, the barrel that held the cold drinks, the color of the water, the soda flavors, and her favorite soda that only exists locally. Then she continues by describing Mr. Sessions always prepared in front of the barrel to

In Bone Gap, by Laura Ruby, perception is everything. The people living in the town love to gossip about everything they see, whether it be accurate or not. For this reason, point of view adds a lot to the novel as the story is told from the views of many different people. The literary device of point of view is very important because the story can greatly change depending on the narrator’s own perception of what is occurring.
Merchant elaborates on the extent of managing exotic gardens inside buildings particularly the mall to recreate a heavenly atmosphere. She considers the work that goes into maintaining these gardens to keep them pristine, from the expensive water works and pesticides utilized to keep the unclean and destructive nuisances from diminishing the aim for perfection in a desirable atmosphere (p.5). These gardens produce the atmosphere to make people happy and content. The greenery provides the feeling of being outdoors while truly being completely inside. She indicates mall landscaping is inspired by surrounding environments that are
Each floor I stopped at had a variety of stores. From eery-looking stores selling Halloween and magic merchandise to a magazine shop selling vintage Playboys and Time magazines from the 40s, to a saloon that invited customers, every corner filled up with something worth staring at or dropping my jaw on. Tibetan artefacts, leather bags, indie artist studios, thrift shops, liquor stores, stationary, carpentry shops, jewellery stores, clothing like t-shirts, hats, ties, and belts, pet care, human care, hair styles, Seattle mementoes, and thousands of other little and large shops lit up as customers
While most people struggle throughout the 1930's depression, the elite, including Arnold Rutherford, are enjoying life to its fullest. For instance, as Arnold likes to reiterate: It's a jungle out there. Except that, as he will find out, there are distinct and widely different jungles out there. Indeed, the merciless wildness of one of them tucked away, between Panama and Colombia, will teach him a lesson he will never forget. Because, of course, his grand, New-York City lifestyle, has not prepared the egotistical man, for a search and collect expedition, that requires constant battle against mother nature. Ultimately, deep into “The Darien Gap”, will Arnold win or lose this fight?
Ron Johnson spent a great deal of time and money to promote his ideas of “stores-within-stores” by turning floor space into an area to house several branded boutiques. He did this in order to attract a target market of a wider demographic which includes age, gender, and generation. One of the m...
Whenever we go out shopping or relaxing at malls, we actually don’t see or recognize any effects of malls as we mostly go there for these two reasons. Malls are an integral part in the lives of America. They are shopping centers that have created a lot of buzz in many writers. This is because we have more malls in America than high schools. Malls have received praises from people like James J. Farrell, Jon Pahl and George Lewis who view malls as not only shopping centers but also as places that provide a reflection of the American culture and serve as centers of pleasure and entertainment. In contrast, William Kowinski and David Gutterson criticize malls for just being an artificial environment that creates disorientation among American shoppers. In my opinion, malls are just magnificent commercial buildings that create a sense of false dreams and imagination.
The ability to create a picture of The Annunciation in one’s mind is a key factor in understanding the analysis of the work. Francisco de Zurbaran approaches the painting with a naturalistic style. The painting features a room in which a woman – like angel is seen at the left kneeling on the ground before the Virgin Mary. The figure of Mary is placed between a chair and a small wooden table draped with a green cloth. Mary disregards an open Bible on the table, as she appears solemn while staring at the floor. Floating above the two main figures in the upper left side of the painting are cherubs resting on a bed of clouds. They happily gaze down at Mary with eyes from Heaven.
One of the most important areas to consider is customer service. The atmosphere of a store
On Monday February 26th I decided to journey to Portland to listen to speaker Manuel Padilla as he presented his seminar “ The Space Between Us: Immigrants, Refugees and Oregon”. With immigration being such a prevalent topic in today's news, I though it intriguing to get the opportunity to learn what difficulties surround immigration. I would also hopefully gain knowledge of immigration issues not only in the nation but also for us oregonians.
According to “Facts About A Gap Year,” the definition of a gap year is “a break typically taken between high school and college that might include travel, work, study, volunteering, or research.” Several colleges encourage their admitted students to take a gap year before starting their freshman year. Done the right way, a gap year can help students excel, while if a student completely puts aside their responsibilities, it can plummet their success in college. Students who take a gap year after high school not only mature, but also are prepared for college and the rest of their lives.
