There is a gap between men and women in the United States. Men are considered superior while women are considered inferior. Men are stereotyped as the breadwinners or the bosses while women are stereotyped as the housewives or the employees. In the Twenty-First Century, “fifty-seven percent” of women obtain degrees and high paying jobs while most men are unemployed or make minimum wage (Samuelson). Despite this, men still continue to get paid more than women in high paying job sand continue to be considered superior to women in almost every field. Can thus conclude that it is better to be a male in today’s society?

Kevin Miller reports, “At the rate of change between 1960 and 2015, women are expected to reach pay equity with men in 2059.” 2059 is quite a long time from now. Some may think that this is a considerable time frame, but any feminist would frown upon the time frame. The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. It happens when a man and a woman standing next to each other doing the same job for the same number of hours get paid different salaries. On average, full-time working- women earn just “77 cents for every dollar a man earn.” When you compare a woman and a man doing the same job, “the pay gap narrows to 81 percent (81%)” (Rosin). Fifty-one years ago, in order to stop the gender gap discrimination, Congress enacted the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The act states that all women should receive “equal pay for equal work”. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, he hoped that it would allow working women to finally earn the same amount of money as men; however, more than half a century later, men continue to out earn women in almost every field of work (Lipman para. 4). When separating men and women according to gender, most people would do it based on physical appearance. Would you have ever thought that you can tell whether someone is man or woman according to psyche? Psychological gender differences have had a long history dating back for more than a century. The use psychological research on women began in 1879 which also marks the beginning of formal psychology. Any research done during these years was mostly used to the notion that the white male was supreme over everyone else. This belief is a gender stereotype and children develop their gender based beliefs on such things. I believe children should develop their gender based beliefs from studies that are unbiased and doesn’t favor one gender over another.

The pay gap between genders is increasingly becoming a hot topic of discussion. Recently I have witnessed conversations, read news articles and heard stories about women being paid unfairly and only making a small percentage of what men earn. Forbes Magazine states that in the last decade, full-time working women on average only make 77 percent of what men earn (Maatz). There is even a day dedicated to recognizing when women’s wages finally match men’s wages from the previous year; this day is called Equal Pay Day (Maatz).
Women had suffered unfair pay in the workforce for years. Statistics have shown that men still earn more than women who have the same degree, education, and qualifications. Women are the main focus for the uneven and unequal share of low-wages in the United States.
