Throughout the centuries the role of the nurse has evolved through many changes due to the demands of healthcare. Currently, there seems to be a shift from the hospital setting and treating diseases to the community and preventive health. I think the future of the professional nurse will continue to evolve around social, economic, political, economic, technological, and organizational issues. As the public becomes more involved in their care, nurses will become more involved in the community to address its needs and assist in preventive care. Technological presence in healthcare allowed many physicians to better treat their patients. Since the advancement of technology in the medical field, more lives have been saved and the quality of life is continuously improving. Now, physicians can access their patient’s information or any information they need without being physically present in the hospital. Nevertheless, the disadvantage of technological presence that I can think of is the over dependency of healthcare staff once the technology has adapted. The 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report- The Future of Nursing described the role that nurses have in the current and future US health care environment (IOM, 2011). This report was completed at a time when the Affordable Care Act had been passed and a new emphasis was being put on interdisciplinary healthcare teams, care coordination, value-based payment systems, and preventative care (IOM, 2011). Nursing is the largest profession in health care and with an aging baby boomer populace, the expanded role of nurses will be critical in meeting the growing healthcare burdens (Sisko et al., 2014).
Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. With our ever changing life styles and the increased levels of pollution across the world more and more people are suffering from various health issues. Nursing is an extremely diverse profession and among the highest educated with several levels ranging from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) on up to a Doctorate in Nursing. Diane Viens (2003) states that ‘The NP is a critical member of the workforce to assume the leadership roles within practice, education, research, health systems, and health policy’.

As long as nursing continues to grow, there is no limit to the achievements that can be accomplished in the profession, for not only the individual patients, but also for the healthcare industry as a whole. Nurses must remember, that as they move forward, they will continue to break down barriers and stake their claim as a necessity in healthcare. Nurses must also hold tight to the teachings of their predecessors. The future of nursing holds great advances in healthcare and technology innovation; but, most importantly, the future of nursing needs to be saturated with nurses that are willing to put their heart and soul into healing the human spirit. The future of nursing must bring with it the teachings of the past, while providing their patients with the most qualified nursing care.
A myriad of challenges are faced in healthcare today. From over-crowding and long waiting lists to staff shortages which have knock on effects resulting in inadequate skills mix and unacceptable nurse-patient ratios. An aging population, high birth rates and an increase in chronic diseases also puts pressure on the healthcare system. The nursing role has had to evolve in response to changing societal needs and the challenges in the healthcare system today. (McCurry et al. 2009). Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many would mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians, support staff.
The unit I worked at, we are very familiar with telemedicine (telehealth) especially in the weekends/holidays when we don’t have providers on site available to assess and evaluate patients who need their expertise. After patients are evaluated and admitted to our floor, they describe their experience about telemedicine as convenient, minimal waiting time, and getting an instant medical answer. Whereas the disadvantages of using telemedicine are a power outage, slow internet connection, loss of privacy and confidentiality, no consultation, and even no stable patient-nurse relationship. According to WHO, despite those barriers, telemedicine has the potential to decrease emergency room visits and hospitalizations, promote quality care for patients

Throughout time, nurses have worked hard, whether the profession was well respected or not, which is how many of the different changes have happened in nursing. This profession has been evolving continuously to shape what is happening in the nation and the world to continue to help the sick and injured. You can see throughout time what influences the events had on the changes in the field of nursing. Nursing will continue to evolve with new and different hospital structures and more advanced technology. No matter how advanced the gadgets become or how complex the job is, nurses will remain being caregivers and with vouch for the sick and at risk members of our communities.
Several years ago in 2008 the RWJF and the IOM collaborated for two years to discern the future needs of the nursing profession. Most importantly, the objective was to outline the critical actions needed to ensure nursing was ready to seamlessly move towards the future. This was no easy task as nurses work in such diverse settings such as outpatient areas, acute care settings, the community, and long term settings to name a few. Couple this with the fact that nurses have a variety of educational avenues such as the associates, diploma, or bachelor’s degree open to them to achieve the status of registered nurse (Institute of Medicine, 2010). All of this considered, the committee did design four key messages regarding the future of nursing as key in the transformation of health care as evidenced in their "Future of Nursing" report.
