In the online article by Max J. Castro, Ph. D, The Future of Spanish in the United States, the author effectively use logic and reasoning to explain why the longevity of the Spanish language is possibly threatened in the United States. The article states a lot of statistical information about Spanish as a language in the United States, including that it is predicted to be the largest Spanish speaking country in the world by 2050. Even today Spanish is by far the second most spoken language in America, aside from English. Although the amount of speakers is increasing so much, it’s also mentioned in the article, with large concern, that the language could end up depleting in the long term. Ethos, also known as credibility or authority is the way the author establishes that they can be trusted. This is used in this article as it is written by a Ph.D who is also a member of a research team at the University of Miami. Another example of this is mention of the U.S. census bureau, a well known and trusted source. Logos translates to logic, or reasoning. There is a good amount of logos in this article, for example, he uses data and statements from people to make his points solid. Pathos, or emotion, is used to appeal to the readers emotions, and make them feel for what they are reading. The author is a Spanish speaker himself, and makes it obvious that he cares about the state of the language. He gives examples of people’s statements, and a lot of them invoke pride in the readers if the also speak Spanish. "I 'm a Latino from California, and was not taught Spanish as the result of the prejudice my grandparents endured while growing up in L.A. during the 1930s and 1940s. When they had their own children, they opted not to pass the language on. It was their way of 'protecting ' their kids from the evils of prejudice. When using quotes, the author can show that he has done research because he pulled the quotes from multiple sources. An example of this ethos is on page 32 chapter two, it states “Tolstoy once wrote what fascinated him about war was “its reality” – not the strategies of generals or the maneuvers of troops but the “actual killings”. “He was more interested to know in what way and under the influence of what feelings one soldier kills another”. This is a prime example of ethos because it evokes the emotion of the reader, not only this but it talks about emotion which is in fact ethos. Most importantly, I wanted to understand why people are so dedicated to their heritage even though they are apart of the United States culture. In our educational system we have students that come from all around the world, but according to figure 3.1 on page 89 throughout years the Hispanic population has increased. Because of the increase of non-english speakers in our educational system, I believe that future teachers must prepare with ideas and ways to teach these students English and make them feel welcomed. I, being bilingual could not personally explain how it was like to be ignorant of the English language because i started school at the age of four and my parents said i learned the language in three months. I believe that being bilingual is very prestigious because it is an opportunity for better understanding of the non-English speaking community and better pay. Throughout the years i have heard that knowing a second language and speaking it is considered unpatriotic. I completely disagree with this assumption because students who come from other countries will grow up like i did loving this country more than their native country because that is what the educational system teaches you.
