Introduction
The food pantry at Ruth’s Place, House of Hope can be found in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania or online at www.ruthsplace.org. The pantry is easily accessible by public transport, telephoning, or writing the director at her email. As the building that houses the food pantry is the home of a shelter for women experiencing homelessness, the pantry is open daily, around the clock. The pantry is open to all who are in need and demostrate need by meeting basic criteria and uses nutritional education to enhance users overall qusality of life.
The pantry is affiliated with the Weinberg Regional Food Bank, which serves as their coordiantor and distrubuter. Through the Weinburg Regional Food Bank the program at Ruth’s Place is allfiated with the Commission on Economic Opportunity, and exists as a subsidiary of Feeding America and the Pennsylvania Association of Regional Food Banks (Commission on Economic Opportunity [CEO], 2014). As such, there are two mission statements that govern the pantry operations at Ruth’s Place.
In the first instance, they uphold the Weinberg Regional Food Bank mission of eradicating hunger by providing resources to agencies so as to increase public awareness and provide training in nutrition (CEO, 2014). The second mission statement that governs the food bank is Ruth’s Place’s own mission statement. According to their website, Ruth’s Place is committed to whole person approach in serving their clientele, addressing not only physical needs, but emotional, financial, health and spiritual needs in such a way that empowers residents to make meaningful long term choices (2014).

Kawartha Food Share distributes meals, and emergency care needs to over 7,000 people every month. The food share has continuingly been supportive to the needy for 15 years. While this is the case, the City and Country of Peterborough and its 37 member agencies served 6.5 million dollars worth of food over the years! Kawartha Food Share is 15000 sq. foot warehouse and is rented, so even being a non-profit organization, has to pay rent. This ranges from four city food banks, six housing projects, four meal programs, etc.
Food insecurity is one of the major social problems that we have in our world today. The concern about this problem is the increasing number of people that are beginning to experience hunger more often. “While hunger has long been a public health concern in developing countries, it has received varying degrees of attention in the United States, most notable during the 1930s and 1960s” (Poppendieck 1992). According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 32 million adults and 15 million children. For over 35 years, Feeding America continues to be in the forefront in solving this crisis by providing food to people in need through a nationwide network of food banks. In the late 1960s, Van Hengel established the nation’s first food bank and years later established the first national organization of food banks, Second Harvest. Second Harvest was later called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network and in 2008, the national organization changed its name to Feeding America.
In efforts to eliminate hunger in the Austin Community, Hope Church operates a food pantry that provides food and supplies to local residents within the 60651 and 60644 postal zip codes. The Pantry is operated by a friendly volunteer staff who’s there to be a blessing to others! The hope food pantry is a non-profit organization which distributes food to a variety of community agencies which serve the people in need. Last year alone, over 1 million pounds of food was distributed throughout our community. The hope food pantry also host special events to raise money and food for our community. For every dollar raised, the food pantry can provide ten meals to the needy.

Hunger is a very important issue in the United States. The film “Place at the table” addresses to this problem through the stories of American people and families who have to face the struggle with hunger on the daily basis. It is hard to believe that such a prosperous country like United States has such an issue, but the statistics provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture tells us the horrifying truth that one in every six Americans does not have enough food to eat. That is approximately fifty million people. The government and majority of US people are in denial of this problem, because they are simply ashamed to acknowledge it. Hunger can be next door in your neighborhood, but nobody knows about it, because people afraid to talk about it.
The United States Department of Agriculture defines food unsecurity as the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire such food, is limited or uncertain for a household. Food insecurity also does not always mean that the household has nothing to eat. More simply stated it is the struggle to provide nutritional food for ones family and/or self. The people that suffer from food insecurity are not all living below the poverty line. In 2012 49.0 million people were considered food insecure in the United States of those 46.5 million were in poverty (Hunger & Poverty Statistics, 2012). For some individual’s food insecurity is only a temporary situation for others it maybe for extended period. Food insecurity due temporary situation such as unemployment, divorce, major medical or illness can be become more long term. The vast majority of these are families with children.
For those students that might qualify for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, I met with the University of Minnesota director of public health to discuss and implement a process aimed at reaching out to those students. I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. Celia’s house designed to address the multitude of issues related to adolescent mothers and to give homeless mothers a second chance at success. Celia’s House goal is to put young mothers on a firm path of long-term economic stability which provides young mothers with support to become self-sufficient parents. Celia’s House is a non-institutional group home setting were teen mothers are provided with supportive relationships, counseling, educational incentives, and support for long-term economic independence, child development, and parenting and life skills.
Food insecurity and poor nutrition is an alarmingly large problem for low income families, especially in developing countries. Many strategies exist to fight this problem, although not many of these address all the factors contributing to it along with all the possible solutions to solve it. In many cases, multiple strategies must correlate and work together so that all the determinants of this issue are addressed and can fight food insecurity from different angles. This essay will discuss the significance of the problem, a range of possible strategies to solve the problem, and go into detail on a select few that will correlate and work together to solve different factors of food insecurity and poor nutrition.
Where does the food pantry get its food? They have four sources of where they get their food. The four sources are food drives, food rescues, food banks, and they purchase some of their own food. The food drive consists of individual donations, which are usually canned goods. The food rescue consists of charities building relationships with local businesses around their area.
