1.1 Mechanism of a “musical” floppy drive
The floppy drive itself is musical in a certain way depending on what people may perceive as musical such as the sound of friction. In my project, the floppy drive makes sounds through pitched notes due to friction between the read-write head and the diskette. It produces notes since the diskette has contact friction with read write head, in revolution. Recall that sine waves can be viewed as the progression of a circle over time, or a revolution. Spinning at higher speeds increases the pitch and also the frequency. The spindle motor spins the floppy drive at a certain speed controlled by the microcontroller. Then, read write head will be positioned on the diskette with a drive motor that will propel it up and down on the floppy disk, making a precise pitch that audible for the human ears. For example, when we use a saw or a blender, the audible noise we hear when the machine spins is a certain pitch or sometimes a narrow band noise since there is not an exact pitch associated with it. The timbre of the musical floppy drive is quite unique and also very resonant in terms of vibration. However, due to a lack of slower spin speed, the device is unable to play low pitched notes very well. On the other hand high pitched notes are quite easy to play. Floppy drives are limited to a certain range of notes to be played at the same time, you would require many floppy perform chords unless they have the same notes. Also, the floppy drive does not play commanded notes on its own; it requires electrical signals to run through its 34 pin connections. I will not go into much detail because the musical floppy disk has been around for barely a decade and a few years. Its history has not been monitored so the discovery of its musicality remains unknown, but floppy drives that are converted into music players have been starting to spread on the Web since 2007 when a YouTube video about the musical floppy drive was posted but it is not possible to determine if it had existed before that date. There is a lot of missing information on this matter and it remains open to debate whether who was first or what time was it created. According to Google statistic, the internet search engine, it was around 2008 that people started looking up on floppy drives performing music. In brief, there is a big gap on the history of floppy drive “music”, however, we do have a few dates that may be useful but not credible.

Music has been around for thousands of years throughout the world dating all the way back to prehistoric times proven by the digging up of a 9,000-year-old flute that had seven holes drilled into it to create a musical scale in China ("Prehistoric flute music:," 2000). Music went through numerous stages before becoming what we know music as today. The earliest periods of music were the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Periods which took place from the years 500-1760. The next cluster of periods were the Classical, Romantic, and Modern Periods which ended in 1930 to bring us to the most recent periods: Twentieth Century Period and the ongoing Contemporary and Twenty First Century Periods.
People relate to music. We sing it. We cry to it. We laugh to it. The reason: we can see ourselves in music. We can let go of our feelings and just relate to the words or the instruments. One way the songwriter connects the listener to the music is through plot: the problem or reaction to a problem a character/singer is expressing. Whether it is a fight with a lover, a fight with a friend, finding a lover/friend, or any other, the plot is helps the listener relate to the song.
Music has shaped the lives of people throughout history. Even in its earliest forms, music has included use of instruments. One of the oldest musical instruments known is a variation of the flute; the original flute is thought to date back nearly 67,000 years ago. Tonight we are going to move throughout the eras with a history of instrumental music. This concert will begin with the Renaissance Era and continue through time until we have reached modern instrumental music.
In today’s evolving and changing society, many people do not appreciate how extraordinary music truly is. Since the birth of the vinyl record, there are less people who own and are interested in them. Even though vinyl records have recently been making a comeback, they are still not as popular as they once were. People take for granted how easily accessible music is today though in the past it was not as simple. Even though vinyl records may be costly and may not have a large quantity of songs, as time progresses and technology continues to develop, the way that people listen to music degrades their appreciation for music due to easier accessibility, weaker sound in terms of quality, and decaying genres.
The first thing I think of when I hear the word music is country or hip-hop, because that is what I mainly listen too. I listen to country music the most, and I can relate the songs to my life. They sing a lot about trucks, women, and drinking beer, and I would say that is a big part of my life, especially drinking beer. I grew up in rural Montana and all my friends parents were farmers or ranchers. My hometown reminds me of the places that country singers sing a lot about and I can relate to that. Relating music to my major might be a bit more difficult. Music itself might not be engineered, but musical instruments have to be engineered to make the right sound come out of them. All musical instruments that are created are engineered by someone and they all have different designs. The design of an instrument depends a lot on what sound it produces and to change the sound you need engineering.
The Use of Electronic Technology in 20th and 21st Century Music In this essay, I have examined the use of electronic technology within 20th and 21st Century music. This has involved analysis of the development and continuing refinement of the computer in today’s music industry, as well as the theory of the synthesiser and the various pioneers of electronic technology, including Dr. Robert Moog and Les Paul. Also within the essay, I have discussed the increasing use of computers in the recording studio. The computer has become an indispensable tool in ensuring that both recording and playback sound quality is kept at the maximum possible level. Many positive ideas have come from the continued onslaught of computerisation.
There are so many different kinds of music, and thanks to the variety of instruments the combinations of sounds that we can make are limitless. Before we look at musical instruments we have to look at music itself. We need to know what it is made of and learn some basic terms.
Music is made with many different kinds of instruments and/or your voice. Some of those instruments are: guitars, violins, flutes, drums, and many new electrical instruments.
The first music era know to man was the "Prehistoric Music." This was quite possibly influenced by birds singing and other animal sounds as they were communicating with each other. It was developed with the backdrop of natural sounds. Some evolutionary biologists have theorized that the ability to recognize sounds not created by humans as "musical" provides a selective advantage.
