Once upon a time, there was an overprotective father who had five of the most stunning daughters in all the land. He was so protective that every night when they went to bed, he ordered that the doors be locked and that two men be outside the room keeping guard at all times. Despite this, every morning when the room was unlocked, the daughters’ shoes were worn out, and it was as if they had been twerking through the night. None of the father’s greatest men could figure out why this happened or where the daughters had been.
The father was so anxious for an answer that he made an announcement: Anyone who revealed the secret and found out where the daughters went every night would be able to have his favorite daughter for a girlfriend. However, anyone who tried and failed for three days and three nights would be put in jail.
The first to take on the challenge was a man from a neighboring town. When it was time for bed, Drew was taken to the daughters’ room. He decided he would stay there all night in order to watch to see where they went. However, Drew soon fell asleep. When he woke up in the morning, the daughters’ shoes had all been worn though. He spent the next night and the night after that trying to stay awake long enough to see where they went, but every night he managed to fall asleep, and the father put him in jail. Several others tried the task after hearing of Drew’s failure, but none were successful.
It just so happened that a soldier who had been wounded in battle was passing through the city. As he was walking, he met an old woman who questioned where he was going.

The next morning, the father summoned the soldier to the office room. The father asked if he had found out where his precious daughters’ went every night. The soldier answered, “Yes. They dance with five men on a dance floor underground.” He then proceeded to tell the father all that he had seen and presented the silver, gold, and diamond leaves as well as the cup.
He then called for his daughters and asked if what the soldier said was true. When they saw the leaves and the cup, they pleaded guilty. Their father asked the soldier which he wanted for his girlfriend, and, as the soldier was not a very young man, he chose the firstborn. They were together that same day, and later that year got married.
Herbert walked into the bathroom, closed the door but did not lock it behind her. While Herbert was in the shower, Chuldzhyan entered the bathroom and slid open the shower curtain. Herbert saw that Chuldzhyan was naked and told him she likes to shower alone and not to come in with her. Chuldzhyan stood next to the shower and fondled her breast. Herbert pulled the shower curtain closed. Herbert heard Chuldzhyan walk out of the bathroom and slammed the door closed. Once Herbert was done showering, she noticed that Chuldzhyan took her clothing. Herbert used a white T-shirt that belonged to Chuldzhyan. Herbert walked out of the bathroom only wearing the white T-shirt and sat back on the living room couch. Chuldzhyan was in the kitchen pouring another glass of wine for Herbert. Herbert drank half of the glass of wine when Chuldzhyan began to fondle her breast and vagina over and under her clothes.
One day Daniel is greeted by a brother and sister that decided to visit the mountain, not knowing a band of rebels lived there. Daniel talks with them and asked them about the village which he left five years earlier. Then one of the men apart of Rosh’s group of rebels, Ebol came and said that Rosh had a task for them to get a very big slave which Rosh wanted. After Daniel telling the brother and sister, Joel and Malthace, to leave at once they refuse and Joel hides his sister behind a rock while Joel goes with Daniel. After getting the signal from Rosh, Daniel and Joel take the salve and bring him to Rosh. Bill told him “he busts his balls for me” that he was a good kid. Again,another life lesson, that working hard had paid off for him. The sheriff told him that if it all checked out he would bring him back. However, the Sheriff took all his money and threw him in a jail cell. It was there that he broke out and ran. He hitched a ride to Oregon. He was pissed and mad. He fell asleep in the man's car on the way to Oregon. When he awoken he was offered some coffee and doughnuts. However, before eating them a peasant came through the windshield and killed the man. The car was wrecked and the boy was scared. He got out of the car and headed down the road. He then picked up by Hazel. She took him to her farm, fed him and cleaned him up and he was grateful for that. Hazel took the boy to the county fair. It is 9:00am on a warm July morning. John Smith is dropped off near an affluent neighborhood. He creeps down a side street and enters the back yard of a large home. John uses a pry bar he had hidden in his pants to break open the door. Once inside he heads for the upstairs. When he reaches the second floor he finds the door to the master bedroom and enters to find the jewelry he had come for. John takes the watches, bracelets, necklaces, and rings and stuffs them into a small duffle bag. He quickly turns and when he exits the bedroom is confronted by a teenage girl, who he knows to be the daughter of the home owner. John makes a quick decision and hits the girl in the head with the pry bar and she falls to the floor. John now panicky flees the home.
The story starts off with two waiters waiting to close their cafe for the night. They only have one customer left an old man who is deaf and drunk. He’s their regular customer and the waiters know a lot about him including his suicide attempt that was stopped by the old mans niece. A soldier walks by with a young woman. The waiter are wondering if the soldier will pick up the old man but then they realize it doesn’t matter as long as the soldier gets what he wants from the women. The old man wants another drink so he asks the waiter to bring him another glass of whiskey. The younger waiter pours another glass, while he’s serving the old man his whiskey he suspiciously commenting that the old man should have killed himself. The older and younger waiter get into an argument on old age and how the young waiter thinks it’s a bad thing, and older waiter thinks its not as bad as it seems. The older waiter bring up a point that even though the old man is drunk he is still clean and proper, even when he’s drunk. The older man yet asks for another drink but the young waiter in hurry denies the old man because he just wants to close the cafe and go home to his wife. The intricate complexity and astonishingly realistic descriptions of space in Doris Lessing’s The Fifth Child masterfully illuminates society’s dire inability to cope with it’s imperfection. Society demands immaculate perfection, a world free of defect, and the lust to live in a flawless utopia drives the identification and elimination of crude invalids. These desolate individuals are feared and deemed to be barbarous degenerates who must be placed beyond the boarders of functioning society to assure an uncorrupted world. Less desirable beings are cast into heterotopias or “counter-sites” while society denies their existence and feigns perfection. Lessing’s novel tears this image down and hastily exposes society’s despicable attempts to marginalize, blame, and exile those regarded as abnormal and dysfunctional in the supposedly immaculate world. In The Fifth Child the precisely executed heterotopia of the institution draws on this theory of a parallel space as a capsule for undesired bodies and Harriet, the mother of a repugnant beast, is victim to society’s brutality. Harriet is an outcast and her remarkably horrific interaction with the cruel institution further alienates her from her family and miserably casts her into her own tumultuous heterotopia.
