The First Stages Of Development: The Development Of Human Development

Good Essays
Thinking about human development the first thing that pops into my mind would have to be fetal development. Not only is it the first stage of life, but it is also the most critical. To understand how critical the development of a fetus is knowing what happens in every stage when the fetus is growing, and what can have an effect on the fetus or what could go wrong. In just 9 short months the fetus is full term and everything as pretty much developed, during the months in between a tremendous amount of growing is done. Of course the first part of this amazing cycle occurs with the zygote . "Gestation is the period of time between conception and birth when a baby grows and develops inside the mother 's womb." This does not mean that the mother…show more content…
The fetus starts to get his/hers appendages, eyes, toes, and organs have begun to develop. Also during theses few weeks a miscarriage can happen. "Many early miscarriages (before 12 weeks) happen because there is something wrong with the baby. A miscarriage can start like a period, with spotting or bleeding. A later miscarriage may be due to an infection, problems in the placenta, or the cervix being weak and opening too early in the pregnancy." This is a very tragic event to occur, but it is just a sign that something is not right with that pregnancy, so the body gets rid of it. Also the mother should never drink or smoke while pregnant, if the mother were to smoke or drink while she is pregnant some effects from her actions are. Drinking while pregnant can cause many problems "the damage can be long lasting and severe, ranging from mental retardation to heart damage." Smoking while pregnant can have more effect on the babies, because smoking by itself is already extremely dangerous "babies of smokers may face even more problems after birth. A study at Brown University suggested that babies of mothers who smoke throughout pregnancy may experience withdrawal-like symptoms (such as being jittery, sad, or difficult to soothe) similar to those seen in babies of mothers who use drugs. Smoking may also increase a baby 's risk…show more content…
The arms and legs that were growing last month are now fully developed. Now" Fingernails and toenails are beginning to develop and the external ears are formed. The beginnings of teeth are forming. Your baby 's reproductive organs also develop. By the end of the third month, your baby is fully formed. All the organs and extremities are present and will continue to mature in order to become functional. The circulatory and urinary systems are working and the liver produces bile." Basically now is just for everything to mature and to grow with the baby as it grows. Also the major organ systems such as urinary, circulatory, nervous, ext... all start to form and perform in the fetus. Next to start developing which does not happen until about five months along is "beginning to feel the baby move, since he or she is developing muscles and exercising them. This first movement is called quickening. Hair begins to grow on baby 's head. The baby 's shoulders, back, and temples are covered by a soft fine hair called lanugo. This hair protects the baby and is usually shed at the end of the baby 's first week of life. The baby 's skin is covered with a whitish coating called vernix caseosa. This "cheesy" substance is thought to protect baby 's skin from the long exposure to the amniotic fluid. This coating is shed just before birth." The Vernix caseosa most people would have no idea what this is or that it
