In our everyday lives we face constant challenges, some experience more than others. In the novel The Fault in our Stars by John Green, a young highschool girl Hazel has cancer. She faces her everyday teenage challenges as she fighting cancer. To get through each day she uses different coping skills to make her days a little bit easier. Hazel is a sixteen year old girl who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer as a little girl. Her whole life had been shifted and turned upside down by her cancer. She had to leave high school, get her GED and start college early. Hazel had to leave all of her friends and adjust to a completely new life. Having a normal life was really not going to happen but her mother tried as hard as she could to give Hazel a normal life. Cancer not only affects the person who has it but also the people in that person’s life. For people to get through the cancer experience, they have to cope. Coping is constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage [that is master, tolerate, reduce, minimize specific external and/or internal demands [and conflicts among them] that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of the person (Lec 9, 11,2,16) To break it down, coping is a method of finding personal ways to deal with emotional disturbances in stress. Hazel uses this way to cope with her stress. Two ways she uses coping is distracting herself, and using humour. Not everyone copes in the same ways though. Everyone has their own way to cope with their own situations. To be able to cope, a person must interpret their stressors which is called Primary Appraisal. The person can ask themselves, “Is the situation a threat to them?”, “What are their coping options?”, “Is it positive or negative?”, a... ... middle of paper ... ...tting hurt in the process. It is just a way of life and she needs to just go with it. She started to approach her cancer more when Augustus came into her life. He shows Hazel a different way to view life. He shows her that life is a gift and to make everyday count. He also shows Hazel that it is okay to talk about cancer because that is their reality. Augustus has a confidence about himself that brings out confidence in Hazel. He shows her how optimistic he is about life and that even if they are sick there is so much they could be doing. The way Hazel and augustus coped was emotion focused coping. They regulated and controlled their emotions (Lec 9, 11, 2, 16). Cancer takes a toll on anyone who has it. It is not something you can ignore. Some find it impossible to cope with having cancer but others make the best out of it and continue to live life to the fullest.
