Throughout A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, many characters influence and change their own destinies. The two main examples of this are Sydney Carton and the French people as a whole. However, there is one character who is so influential, that she alters the fates of many others. Her name is Madame Defarge. These characters, and many others, exemplify how one's destiny can be changed. Sydney Carton is a prime example of changing one’s destiny. In the beginning he is a depressed drunken man who has potential, but no self confidence. When drunk and talking to Charles Darnay he says this about himself. “I am a disappointed drudge, sir. I care for no man on Earth, and no man on earth cares for me.” He decides to start to turn things around when he confronts Lucie about his love for her. Even though he is rejected, is is a huge moment in his life and he became involved with her family. This is the best thing that could of happened to him. At the end of the book, and his life, he reaches his maximum potential by sacrificing himself for Darnay. On the way to the Guillotine he meet...
