It’s mid-June. I graduated a few days earlier and here I am sitting nervously on a bench outside Lane Bryant, staring at the gate It’s my first job interview ever. I’m nervous as hell. I must have dried my hands fifty times on my dress but they’re still sticky with sweat. A woman comes to the front and opens the gate. She asks my name, I tell her. She nods, smiles, shakes my hand, introduces herself as Fran and tells me how cute I look. I beam and thank her. I’m not used to compliments. One of the questions she asks me is what my best shopping experience was like. I rack my brain. What kind of question is that? I think. Taking a deep breath I reply that it would have to be the first time I ever shopped there, at Lane Bryant. She looks at me skeptically. I explain how my mom guided me there after a long discouraging day of school clothes shopping. To pacify her, I follow and try on jeans and a t-shirt. I leave the dressing room to model for Mom and the sales lady squeals over how good I look. I’m taken aback. Somewhere in the back of my mind I know that she does this to make the sale but it’s the first time I’ve ever been complimented by a salesperson. I feel welcome here. I don’t get the “You? You think you’ll be able to buy anything here?” look. By the end of my story I’m nearly in tears. I smile sheepishly. I get the job. As I leave, Tess, another woman who works at the store, tells me I look great. I do. I am beautiful.
Early July. Mel invites twenty of her closest friends to swim in her pool after a barbecue at the beach. I’m standing on the deck, beach towel wrapped around me. Everyone else is in the pool. I’m trying to think of the least conspicuous way to slip into the warm inviting pool. Amanda notices I’m just standing there and calls for me to join them, also calling everyone's attention to me. I swallow the huge lump in my throat, throw my towel over the rail and jump in the water, praying no one saw the jiggling of my thighs as I leapt. Later they’re having chicken fights and I’m floating alone in the deep end.
It was my senior year of high school, I was sixteen, getting ready to turn seventeen. It was my senior year of high school. I was not your typical girl wearing makeup everyday and worrying about getting dolled up for school. I did not play sports. Don’t get me wrong, I would get all dolled up if I had something special to do like go to a school dance. I had a part time job at Olive garden because my parents motto was “if you do not play a sport you need to work!” My mom used to say to me “you know Alana back in my time I was not able to work so you are very lucky you're able to work.
Mad cow disease is caused by prions, "weird mutant proteins that are found in brain and spinal tissue"1. Another name for mad cow disease is called bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and the definition is "a progressive neurological disorder of cattle that results from infection by an unusual transmissible agent called a prion"2. It started from what is called a prion protein then it turned into a pathogenic, and then it starts to damaged the brain of a cattle. It is rare, degenerative, and invariably fatal"3. This disease happen in human causing lapses in the memory, mood swings similar to depression, lack of interest and social withdrawal3. The first question was, “Have you ever traveled out of the country?”. All the girls answered confidently about all the countries they have visited and even added stories about their travels. Every girl there had the opportunity to visit countries across the ocean. As my turn reached and they tossed the ball to me, I answered honestly, “ I have never been out of the country”. In response, a girl questions, “What about Mexico?” suggesting that because of my mexican background I had visited Mexico. All the girls began to giggle and I remember thinking that I could not last an entire week amongst those girls. The hour went by and all I learned about my floor mates was that their school and town offered so much compared to mine. Every conversation started during that first hour was a battle about who was the best. I realized how I did not belong but had to make myself stand out and use my differences to my advantage. So, I began to show who I was and did not let any intimidation bring me down. During my time at California Girls State, I ran for office positions, was involved in many debates, and befriended

In the beginning of 2012, I lost my job and have been searching for a job for several months. At that time I was very stressed because I could not find anything that was suitable for me. One weekend, I decided to go to the shopping mall for some window shopping because i...
George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a book that displays what can occur in a society that is ruled by an oppressive government. By using farm animals, George Orwell shows how an oppressive government can prove to be disastrous and also confining. While the book was originally regarded as a book that parallels the effects of communism, in more recent times the book has also shown to parallel the happenings occurring in what is known as the Arab Spring. Currently, countries involved in the Arab Spring has begun to revolt and rebel against their governments that oppress them in hopes of gaining freedom and equality among the people. These countries include Bahrain, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, and Syria. It is in these countries where the people have grown overly frustrated and angry at their governments that treat them unfairly. While some have become successful in overthrowing their government, there are still those that are struggling. However, Tunisia is not one of the struggling countries but in fact is one that was successful in its revolution. It is in the country of Tunisia were many similarities in its revolution are seen in George Orwell’s book. This paper will attempt to illustrate the equivalences between the events that occurred in Animal Farm but also in the Tunisian revolution.
In The Cowshed, Ji Xianlin provides a recollection of the Cultural Revolution that is both similar and dissimilar to other memoirs. As a professor at Peking University, Ji Xianlin was one of many intellectuals and academics that were targeted by the Red Guards. His description of his experiences of struggle sessions or reform through labor in The Cowshed was not unlike those faced by his peers. Instead of presenting his experiences in anger, Ji Xianlin presents his experience of the Cultural Revolution from the perspective of someone who deserved punishment, not a victim. Moreover, despite everything he experienced, Ji Xianlin remained a loyal supporter of the Communist Party.
My sweat soaked shirt was clinging to my throbbing sunburn, and the salty droplets scalded my tender skin. “I need this water,” I reminded myself when my head started to fill with terrifying thoughts of me passing out on this ledge. I had never been so relieved to see this glistening, blissful water. As inviting as the water looked, the heat wasn't the only thing making my head spin anymore. Not only was the drop a horrifying thought, but I could see the rocks through the surface of the water and couldn't push aside the repeating notion of my body bouncing off them when I hit the bottom. I needed to make the decision to jump, and fast. Standing at the top of the cliff, it was as if I could reach out and poke the searing sun. Sweat dripped from my forehead, down my nose, and on its way to my dry, cracked lips which I licked to find a salty droplet. My shirt, soaked with perspiration, was now on the ground as I debated my
Days went by and the more comfortable it was to wake up to honking cars, business woman’s heels clicking on the pavement and flashing lights. Everyday, the sun’s light reflects off of my apartment's broad windows. I wake each day to put on a tight dress which make curvaceous, voluptuous body stand out. I would walk or find a taxi to take me to work, which was at Bellissimo Magazine. I was a journalist who would take celebrity stories and write long articles but I wasn’t very experienced since I had never dreamed of getting this job. It was rare for anyone inexperienced to get hired. This was the fashion and entertainment industry and I would work hard to impress my sophisticated boss, Joan. She was a hardworking woman but she’s also become like a best friend to me, which was kind of weird to think about but it was true. People here have made me feel welcomed for more than a month now and I think it was time to move on with my life and begin new friendships and find my one true
One balmy summer morning my friends convinced me to come swim in Grapevine Lake, which would be very enticing if I was a strong swimmer or had any swimming experience whatsoever. However, I’m not going to ruin a good, scorching summer day staying home wasting my time playing video

The conversation also made me think of a situation I experienced the weekend before. I went to Bloomingdales in Manhattan on Saturday after a birthday brunch. I was nicely dressed and wearing expensive jewelry. My cousin and I went to the fur salon to look at shearling coats. As soon as we walked into the department a saleswoman asked if we needed help. I explained to the saleswoman what I was looking for and my price range. While I was talking with my cousin, the saleswoman slipped a coat on me she thought I would like. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I saw I was wearing a full-length mink that cost $12,500. I took the coat off, handed it back to the saleswoman and told her I would like to try on coats in my price range. I was annoyed by the pushy sales tactic, but I realized she worked on commission.
As part of my experiment with broaching normative gender images, I decided to visit the perfume counter at my local Sears and inquire about purchasing a bottle for myself instead of a woman. Although a minor interaction, I believed browsing for perfume was something generally associated with females alone. Sears, as a store, is something I have always associated with women myself. This belief is a direct result of a childhood where I was dragged around by my mother when she went shopping at the mall.
The sun is radiant and scorching, as always when it’s August in Michigan, while the lake water is warm with occasional ripples flowing through as the wind subtly blows over. I’ve got my giant pink floaty around my waist with my ridiculously large bug-eyed sunglasses around my face and I’m ready to set myself afloat into the water. As I float on my raft into the warm water I close my eyes while the waves relax me into a soft slumber as I drift into the middle of lake. Without knowing how much time has passed, I awaken to the sound of Alicia’s mom yelling my name and automatically panic,
There was this great huge interview we both had to go through. The panel of judges was randomly selected people from out of town. The judges were dressed really formal. I was wearing a formal flowery dress. The room was so quite when I walked in. I introduced myself to the judges. They asked a lot of questions. One of the questions they asked was “If you had to show a guest around town, where would you take them?” My reply was “I would take them to the movie and then to the ice cream shop.” The was a lot of pressure in the interview portion. I assumed I did pretty well at the time.
