The Fallen Messiah of Generation X
On April 5, 1994, the lead singer and songwriter of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, silently placed the end barrell of a shotgun into his mouth and pulled the trigger. And so ended the life of so much promise. But why did it have to come to this? Perhaps the reasons will never be known, but there were a few things that haunted Cobain throughout his life that he just couldn't seem to get away from.
Cobain's parents were seperated when he was nine years old, and according to friends and family, the divorce that would shortly follow thereafter proved itself to be somewhat of a turning point in the way Cobain viewed himself and others. Up until then, Kurt was a happy child who was full of smiles and who also was ready and willing to forgive anyone who hurt him. But that all changed in 1976.
For the rest of his life, Cobain would never forgive his father, and in time he had a hard time forgetting about his problems.
In 1981, Cobain recieved his first guitar on his fourteenth birthday. It was no secret that he liked music. He loved the Beatles and would sing a song whenever someone asked him to. He was already showing the signs of a talented youngster who held promise in music and writing. In 1986 Kurt decided to start a band with his good friend, Krist Novoselic. They went through several different names before finally settling down with Nirvana. For a few years Kurt played at clubs, bars, and anywhere else that a gig was happening.
In 1989, Nirvana had the opportunity to record an album. Kurt, Krist, and Jason Everman recorded Bleach in three days for a said amount of $600. Sub Pop backed the band up, along with other bands who were hoping to hit it big. But Kurt never wanted that. He wanted Nirvana to remain an underground band. Within two years Bleach had sold 35,000 copies, and by 1991, Nirvana was ready to record another one. They initially signed with Sub Pop Records, but when Sonic Youth signed with Geffen, Kurt went ahead and done the same. On September 24, 1991, Nevermind was released to music buyers all throughout the country.
The band had hoped to sell 50,000 copies at the most, but something went wrong. People who were, by that time, receptive to grunge music had found a band that were different from all the others that they had heard before.
Chris McCandless’ relationship with his father was not ideal. Built up resentment caused by unfaithfulness to his mother caused Chris to cut ties with his father. For most of Chris’ life, his father played
This song became the perfect background for PSA's. Maybe, after all, there was more to this band than sexuality and drugs. This album has a bit of each of the necessary elements to become a hit. In fact, it has. much more than that.
time Nirvana decides to cancel the rest of the tour and take a rest. Through
There was only one problem, he struggled to read music (PBS). Even though he had a difficult time reading and writing music, Hendrix joined his first band The Velvetones for about three months (PBS). In the summer of 1959, Hendrix finally sought out his calling and joined a new band that was called The Rocking Kings. Hendrix would never have gotten very far without his inspirations, which included the famous Buddy Holly, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and many others. In the year 1961 Hendrix joined the United States Army, but was discharged in 1962 due to an injury in
Our hero is Kurt Cobain, he is considered a hero because he helped many people in the 1990’s feel happy with his music, and the things that he spoke out against. In the 1990’s about 60,000 families were divorced, most of them had teens. Those teens could relate to Kurt Cobain, and he told them that they weren’t alone. Some background information about Kurt Cobain is that when he was going into his early 20’s he started experience stomach pain due to his scoliosis. This is the reason that he started to take heroin. When he was in high school, he met the bassist of Nirvana, Krist Novoselic, and they became instant friends. They started to practice together every day, and they recorded their first album “Bleach” with Chad Channing on drums. The best reason that Kurt Cobain is our hero is because he knew that he was famous in all but he thought “Since I am well known then maybe I can help prevent men from raping women”.
Music can also help people, particularly those going through painful times (such as adolescence) to understand that they are not alone and that other people have the same feelings that they do. After grunge-rock superstar Kurt Cobain committed suicide in April 1994, one fan wrote to Rolling Stone magazine describing how the music of Cobain's band, Nirvana, made her feel. "I could be feeling like total shit," wrote Carrie Loy, "and hear a Nirvana song and end up feeling renewed afterward.
career yet, the life of a student is proving to be just as busy as those
Recent speculations have fans, reporters, and investigators questioning the death of musician Kurt Cobain that was a reported suicide case. Cobain’s body was found with shotgun wound to his head on April 8th by an electrician at the couples Washington lake house. The same day Cobain’s body was found, news was released that the singer had committed suicide. With lack of investigation Cobain’s body was cremated 6 days after his body was found. The Seattle P.D. withheld the shotgun for 30 days before it was processed for fingerprints; the shotgun was then given back to Courtney Love to be discarded. The Seattle P.D. also condoned the greenhouse that Kurt Cobain’s body was found be torn down. With that, questions arise on whether or not the death was a suicide or a homicide in the matter. Did Courtney Love the beloved musician’s wife plan and set up the death of her
That happened a few times. We’d be stuck with a dead battery because I’d listen to Freddie Mercury too much,” (Cobain). I feel guilty beyond words about these things. For example, when we're back on stage and the lights go out and the manic roar of the crowds begins, it doesn't affect me the way it did for Freddie Mercury, who seemed to love, relish in the love and adoration from the crowd, which is something I totally admire and envy,” (Cobain “Letter”). Along with Kurt Cobain, Freddie inspired his own stand to become a musician.
In high school Cobain befriended a gay student and had to endure bullying from people who though he was gay. Cobain later admitted that he was “gay in spirit” and “probably could be bisexual” (“The Dark Side,” 1992). He dropped out of high school two weeks before graduation because he did not have enough credits, and became a janitor. It was in high school, however, that the beginnings of Cobain’s career were formed. He met Krist Novoselic, and later co...
Abortion is unlike any other subject debated today; millions of women have aborted a child, and the loss, pain, and emotional need to justify what was done, both on the part of the mother and on the part of her loved ones. Abortion is a gut-wrenching debate that has been going on for centuries, and does not plan to cool off anytime soon. The Supreme Court case in 1973, Roe vs. Wade, placed abortion on the map for the United States. The result of the Roe vs. Wade case legalized abortion to protect women’s health, however the good intentions of the ruling opened the doors for people to take advantage of the case outcome. Approximately 1.06 million abortions took place in the United States in 2011, which goes to show that women maybe abusing the privilege of the rules set in place to protect their health and practicing abortion as a form of contraception. Abortion is not only a dangerous procedure for women to endure, however it is also unethical to abort a child. Abortion is immoral because life begins at conception, people need to live with the consequences and not take the easy way out, and there are other available options.
First, let us define what grunge is and where it comes from. Grunge as defined by web encyclopedia alt.culture is the cumulative influences of punk and ‘70s heavy metal (plus rain, coffee, cheap, potent beer, and occasionally heroin), a cohort of Seattle bands developed a soulful hard rock variant that was instrumental to alternative music’s early-‘90s move underground (altculture. com). Among the bands included in the definition Nirvana would be mainly the one that made this phenomenon popular. Released in 1991, Nevermind—a record by an obscure band working in a genre considered as hopelessly uncommercial—launched the grunge phenomenon and marked an era of unprecedented exposure for alternative acts. Then other bands like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Candlebox followed the trail that Nirvana started in the grunge w...
In this paper I will be discussing the two most prevalent models of health. These two models of health are not, of course, total opposites. Similar to terms such as gay and straight they are two definitive labels placed upon a broad spectrum that is hardly definitive. There exists in this case as well a large clouded middle between the two limiting labels. These are collections of thoughts about how to go about continuing life. These two paradigms in modern healthcare I hope will one-day come to know one another. For now let us say that in generally speaking there are two different approaches or models of medicine and they are allopathic and holistic. Allopathic is another term for our modern western medicine, which in the United States is the dominant one and the one most familiar to the masses. The other, the holistic model, also known as alternative, is commonly associated with older ideas that originated in the East.
