In Edgar Allan Poe’s “ The Fall of the House of Usher” and Julio Cortazar’s “ House Taken Over,” the settings were similar because they both took place in a creepy house. however , in Poe’s story, the setting was in the earlier 1900’s and in a worn down house. By contrast, Cortazar’s setting was based in the later 1900’s and their house neat and well kept.
Gothic Literature is an intense and dark genre with eerie moods. The plots are based off of paranormal activities. An example of this is from the story, “ The Fall of The House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe states, “ There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart,”(13)This example supports the idea of Gothic Literature by describing a dark setting with an eerie mood. Another example from the story, “ The Fall of the House of Usher,” that provides evidence of Gothic Literature is, “I was indeed, a tempestuous yet sternly beautiful night,and one wildly singular in its terror and its beauty.”(13) These two quotes help to picture paranormal happenings of an

Gothic Literature was a natural progression from romanticism, which had existed in the 18th Century. Initially, such a ‘unique’ style of literature was met with a somewhat mixed response; although it was greeted with enthusiasm from members of the public, literary critics were much more dubious and sceptical.
When writing a story that is meant to scare the reader, authors use a variety of different literary elements to intensify fear. This is apparent in the stories “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “beware: do not read this poem,” and “House Taken Over”. It is shown through transformation in the character, setting, and sometimes even the story or poem itself, adding to the scariness that the reader feels when reading it. While there are some examples of transformation not being scary or not playing a role in stories meant to scare us, transformation plays a crucial role in making the reader of these stories scared.
“The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe was published in 1839. In it, the short story’s narrator visits a childhood friend, Roderick Usher. The narrator travels to the Usher house, where the story takes place. As in other Poe stories, the settings reflect a character. Throughout the short story, there are many instances when the Usher house and Thought, the castle in Roderick’s poem, reflect Roderick Usher and his family. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the setting of the Usher house along with the setting in Roderick’s poem reflect Roderick Usher in appearances, relations with family, and physical existence.
The Falling of the House of Usher,starts off in a sorrow living and scares setting. It started off with the characters and the house condition that it is very poorly. Then it leads to the bizarreness of the house as the narrator came upon he notice how deeply poor it is and how they accidently buried his sister that was also sick.Then the violence of how things became the house that fell apart. Not just the house died but also the house died along with him and his family that came along with the mystery of the causing of the death. The house is also a symbol of gothic death along with the character's health ,and the smell and how they are presented in the story as a bad poor condition of health.
During the “The Fall House of Usher” I believe when “POE” first received the call to come visit his friend he was a little taken back because he had not spoken to him since grade school. So I believe at first he was reluctant to go. The narrator’s state of mind during this period would probably be confusion and disbelief, since he believed “Usher” was wealthy his vison of his home was wrong. The narrator described the house as a house of death. (702) the narrator has believed that Usher has spread illness throughout the house. Usher was not mental stable since he wish to preserve Lady Madeline body after death. He afterwards he wonder throughout the house aimlessly. (710)
When comparing the stories “The Fall of the House of Usher” written by Edgar Allen Poe and “The House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar. The setting in both are in a creepy, big house with a gothic style to it, which makes it more creepy. Both of the authors were a dark and demented type. Both in their stories have a big, empty house with a few people in them, with either kids that are living alone or with grandparents. Also both stories have a sense of having something under their sleeve to hit us with.

The Gothic crosses boundaries into the realm of the unknown, arousing extremes of emotion through the catalyst of disassociation and subversion of presence. Gothic literature utilises themes of the supernatural to create a brooding setting and an atmosphere of fear.
Edgar Allan Poe is undoubtedly one of American Literature's legendary and prolific writers, and it is normal to say that his works touched on many aspects of the human psyche and personality. While he was no psychologist, he wrote about things that could evoke the reasons behind every person's character, whether flawed or not. Some would say his works are of the horror genre, succeeding in frightening his audience into trying to finish reading the book in one sitting, but making them think beyond the story and analyze it through imagery. The "Fall of the House of Usher" is one such tale that uses such frightening imagery that one can only sigh in relief that it is just a work of fiction. However, based on the biography of Poe, events that surrounded his life while he was working on his tales were enough to show the emotions he undoubtedly was experiencing during that time.
