Some argue that fake news doesn’t matter, and that readers should simply not watch or read any news. Unfortunately, the public cannot just ignore something as prominent as the news, as they are the force protecting the people, or they should be. Many people do not even get fooled from watching news and instead form wrong conclusions from others telling it. Social media makes this practice more common than ever before, and without educating oneself first by watching different news sources, it is impossible to piece together who to trust for oneself. It is a scary tactic that has been used by dictators including Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. Power to immediately disprove any comments against them, on top of the democratic power that that relies on people’s support, creates a very dangerous combination as the public ends up slowly believing anything a man in power says, whether it is true or not. What also ends up happening is people believe information about the country that are not even real pushing for a fix to problems that do not even exist, a large example what the second debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump where Trump has been quoting saying “...crime rates are now at an all-time high…” (Kurtzleben). This has been proven to be absolutely false with the truth being quite the opposite; crime at that time was the lowest it had been since the beginning of the 2000’s (“Statements We Say Are Pants on Fire!”). Of course after stating that, however, three right-leaning fake news sites cited that statistic as true including Inforwars.com, ChristianTimes, and the aforementioned Denver Guardian (“Don't Get Fooled by These Fake News
