First Impressions Motion picture actor Will Rogers once said, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” So have you wondered why that someone treats you differently than others? Possibly see you a certain way? Or think about you in a particular fashion? All this happens because of the impressions you make and how your peers process it. A first impression is the event where one person encounters another person and forms a mental image of that person. It only takes 1/10 of a second for us to judge a person and create an image about them (Wikipedia). Although you may not know it at first, you are constantly judging others while they in turn watch and make speculations about you.

The outcome of an interview/meeting can automatically be predicted in the first few minutes (Elkins). Thus, the importance of having a great first impression is magnified, as it determines the outcome of an interview.

Things you should do during a first impression…

Dress slightly better than the occasion asks for
Make eye contact when speaking, but don’t dominate the other person
Think positively about the other person
Adjust your voice, words, gestures, and posture to the other person
For example, if you use slang with your friends, at an interview, use the proper words
Be confident in yourself and try not to impersonate a person you are not

Are you constantly thought of negatively by others? Positively? Do you have certain events that are connected to you that make others immediately associate them with you when someone thinks of you? These all happen because of the lasting impressions you create. Whether you cross your arms and scowl, or smile and gesture lightly, affects the impression others have about you. These examples are only some of the characteristics that your peers judge you on. Although I use gestures and fidget a lot, I always try to smile and pay attention to the other
