Did you know that the fastest golf cart ever recorded went almost one hundred miles per hour? It is extremely hard to believe that a golf cart, which is a small, compact motorized means of transportation, could even reach ninety eight miles per hour; however, it did! With that in mind, it is incredible how the design of the golf cart has evolved over the years. In order to fully understand the concept of golf carts, one must develop a background in the overall development of golf carts throughout the years, the importance of Harley-Davidson’s impact on the evolution of golf carts, and have a basic apprehension of the simpler engine components involved.
“Golf carts, which were originally created for golfers with disabilities, were introduced to the country in the 1940’s” (The History of the Golf Cart). During World War II, Merle Williams decided to experiment with electric carts, due to the rationing of gasoline at this time. His company, called Marketeer Company, had originally built “buggies” that were used by women when they went grocery shopping in order to aid them in carrying all of their groceries. “After the development of the “buggies” and some fine tuning, Marketeer created the first electric golf cart at its headquarters in Redlands, California. These first golf carts were powered by electrically charged batteries” (The History of Golf Carts). By the 1950’s, golf carts had caught onto the entire golfing community and some of the retirement communities. The first early electric golf cars were the first electric vehicles that people could buy allowing whole communities to embrace this.

They can run on electricity alone for up to 40 miles until it makes the switch to gasoline acting like a hybrid. This means that after they switch to their hybrid mode, they will use both electric and gasoline powered until they are charged again.(Gilpin, 2014) While in hybrid mode the PHEV’s can run up to 400+ miles before needing a recharge. Since the development of the steam engine people had been interested in creating self-powered vehicles, this manifested during the industrial revolution as the train. However, as time went on people became interested in creating a vehicle that wasn’t confined to tracks. The earliest attempts were moderately successful but served little practical purpose. Automobiles first began to truly spread with the invention of the electric motor which created cheaper, more powerful, and safer automobiles. Still the automobile still had numerous problems and were mainly in the hands of the rich. It was the development of the internal combustion engine and the assembly line that was truly able to create a practical vehicle that could be used by all and propelled the automobile into the heart of American culture and made it one of the most significant inventions of the post-industrial revolution era, resulting in a complete revolution of society.

Electric cars are becoming increasingly more necessary, and have more advantages than disadvantages. Electric cars help to decrease the noise, pollution as they are much quieter. They do not emit any (or much less) carbon emission than petrol cars. Electric vehicles are the greenest mode of transport in the personal transportation industry. For each litre of fuel used in an engine produces more than 2.5kg of CO2. CO2 will be produced by an electric car but still a very little amount. It is also possible to use renewable power or a green energy supplier in the electric car. Thus it would lead to less polluted and safe working environment for all of us. However, safety is a big concern with using vehicles. The fluids in the batteries actually take impact better than a fully made gas car because it is not that flammable. Petrol cars and diesel cars are more flammable than electric cars so they are greater of taking impact in the event of an accident. I think that this is a very good reason because fewer people would get injured or hurt. This would save money because electricity is cheaper than gas and electric cars are easy to operate. Also is very ECO –friendly which mean that it is cheaper to run and have to pay very little road tax. In a pure electric vehicle there’s nothing combustible and have far fewer moving parts than you would find in a petrol or diesel car.
