Tennessee Williams was born on March 26, 1911, as Thomas Lanier Williams. Much of Tennessee Williams work shows his fascination with characters facing lonely struggles in emotionally starved environments. Much of his work has biographical roots, harking back to his own family's atmosphere of repression and anger, evoked through characterization of psychologically vulnerable women and domineering men. In his memoirs, Williams called "The Glass Menagerie" with its burden of guilt and cruelty, "the big one-close to the marrow of my being." (1693) In the play, "The Glass Menagerie," I believe that Tennessee Williams did an excellent job with the setting, plot, tone, theme, and the symbolic imagery. Williams also uses lyrical symbolism, and I believe this play is autobiographical, and the characters have to do with the family of Tennessee Williams. I liked the way Williams used the actions of the characters, the point of view, and the climax of the play, to keep me very interested in this play.
I believe the tone of this play is sad, but cynical, and depressing in some sense. Tennessee Williams use both present and past tenses in this play. Tom states, "The play is a memory play. Being a memory play, it is dimly lighted, it is sentimental, it is not realistic. That explains the fiddle in the wings." (1698) Tom states, " I have not enjoyed one bit of my dinner because of your constant directions on how to eat it. It's you that makes me rush through meals with your hawk-like attention to every bite I take." (1698) The setting takes place in an apartment and alley in St. Louis. Tom from an indefinite point in the future, remembers the winter and spring of 1937. (1695) I believe that the theme has to do with the fact of accepting the reality of his life. I think Tom was not able to escape from his life, and could not forget his memory of this incident.
Tom Wingfield (brother) states, "I am the narrator of the play, and also a character in it." (1698) I believe that Tom is the protagonist. Tom is a poet who works in a Continental Shoemakers warehouse. (1706) I think the play is formed by Tom's memory. I believe that Tom loves his mother and sister but feels trapped at home. I think Amanda needs Tom for his earnings, but as long as he stays there he feels trapped.
One of the main focuses is, on the relationship that Tom and Elizabeth Willard had with there son. His parents were unhappily married, both dreading the thought of one another, more and more each day. They both could barely stand the sight of one another as explained in the story, yet neither one of them truly expressed or communicated the mutual feelings. Which could have led to them parting ways and actually being happy.
The family dynamics for Tennessee Williams are evident of a lifestyle of despondency and tension within the household. Tennessee Williams mother Edwina Williams she considered herself a Southern Belle, and his sister Rose Williams was a sickly adolescent whom he shared his imaginative dramatizations with as he transcribed his plays. While Williams was in graduate school at the University of Iowa, Rose was institutionalized for schizophrenia and was underwent a pre-font lobotomy. “The symbolization of lobotomy in the “Glass Menagerie” play signifies the hurt that Tennessee Williams felt by his parents by not collaborating to him that his sister underwent surgery. In the play, Williams substitutes the mental illness of his real sister, with a physical limitation “a limp” which Williams substituted for the mental illness of his real sister, Rose. Even the father’s absence reflects periods when his bullying sales man father, Cornelius Coffin Williams, would go on the road, leaving Tom, Edwina and Rose at one another’s mercies (Charles Matthews, 1996-2016).”
Every time the family comes to a confrontation someone retreats to the past and reflects on life as it was back then, not dealing with life as it is for them today. Tom, assuming the macho role of the man of the house, babies and shelters Laura from the outside world. His mother reminds him that he is to feel a responsibility for his sister. He carries this burden throughout the play. His mother knows if it were not for his sisters needs he would have been long gone. Laura must pickup on some of this, she is so sensitive she must sense Toms feeling of being trapped. Tom dreams of going away to learn of the world, Laura is aware of this and she is frightened of what may become of them if he were to leave.
One strong influence that is evident in Tennessee Williams' plays is his family life, which was "full of tension and despair". His father, a businessman who owned a show warehouse, was known for his gambling and drinking habits. He was often engaged with violent arguments with his wife that frightened Tennessee's sister, Rose. Williams cared for Rose most of her adult life, after his mother, Edwina, allowed her to undergo a frontal lobotomy. This event greatly disturbed him. Many people believe that Williams' first commercial success, The Glass Menagerie, was based on his own family relationships. This play tells the story of Tom, his disabled sister, Laura, and their controlling mother, Amanda, who tries to make a match between Laura and a Gentleman caller. The characters seem to resemble the people in Williams' immediate family.

Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" is no exception the insight Williams portrays is about himself. Being that this play establishes itself as a memory play Williams is giving the audience a look at his own life, but being that the play is memory some things are exaggerated and these exaggerations describe the extremity of how Williams felt during these moments (Kirszner and Mandell 1807). The play centers itself on three characters. These three characters are: Amanda Wingfield, the mother and a women of a great confusing nature; Laura Wingfield, one who is slightly crippled and lets that make her extremely self conscious; and Tom Wingfield, one who feels trapped and is looking for a way out (Kirszner and Mandell 1805-06). Williams' characters are all lost in a dreamy state of illusion or escape wishing for something that they don't have. As the play goes from start to finish, as the events take place and the play progresses each of the characters undergoes a process, a change, or better yet a transition. At the beginning of each characters role they are all in a state of mind which causes them to slightly confuse what is real with what is not, by failing to realize or refusing to see what is illusioned truth and what is whole truth. By the end of the play each character moves out of this state of dreamy not quite factual reality, and is better able to see and face facts as to the way things are, however not all the characters have completely emerged from illusion, but all have moved from the world of dreams to truth by a whole or lesser degree.

Tom is the protagonist in the play and he stays at home with his mother Amanda and his sister Laura. Tom’s Father left the family when he was younger leaving him as the man of the house. His mother Amanda expects him to do everything a man would do. This included working, paying bills, and taking care of herself and Laura. Laura is disabled and she doesn’t work therefore Tom is left providing for his whole family. Being abandoned by Mr. Wingfield left the family distraught. No one seemed to be able to cope with the fact that he was gone even though he left many years ago. Amanda is constantly treating Tom like a child. She tells him how to eat, when to eat, and what he should and should not wear. Tom eventually gets fed up with everything. He can’t stand his factory job, the responsibility of being the man or being treated like a child by his mother. Tom decides to follow in his father’s footsteps and leave the family. It seems as if Tom thinks that running away from his problems will make them go away but things didn’t turn out that way. Although the play was written many years ago, young adults in this day and age can relate to Tom and his actions. The main theme in the play is escape. All of the character use escape in some way. Laura runs to her glass menagerie or phonographs when she can’t handle a situation, Amanda seems to live in the past, and Tom constantly runs away when things aren’t going his way. The character, which includes the physiological and psychological makeup of each person in the play, properly incorporated the greed and oppression of the time. Ben and Oscar are brothers who are possessive, scheming, and greedy individuals. These two characters make the play very interesting. Both brothers’ physiological makeup fit the play perfectly. This is because Ben tires to look like a nice guy on the outside but has only one motive that drives his character. This motive is money. He will do anything to get his cotton mill deal to go through. Then there is Oscar. He is also a lot like Ben, but on the surface not as nice. Because of these two characters, the rest of the characters feed of their hatred and ulterior motives. Another character is Leo who is a weak unprincipled son of Oscar and Birdie. This character is not emotionally strong compared to Ben or Oscar, but still has a very well written part. Birdie is then obviously Oscar’s wife. Birdie has one of the most complex characters in the whole play. Her psychological make up is very complex. Her character has very quick mood changes and subsequently does not seem like she has much power in the physiological makeup of the whole group. Next, there is Regina, who is married to Horace and a sister of Oscar and Ben. She undoubtedly has the most devious psychological makeup of all the other characters put together. She has a very cold heart towards her husband. This was the most thoroughly created character in the whole play although it was also the most troubled character. Every line that she said was written for a specific purpose and was usually only to help herself. Married to Regina is Horace. Horace’s character was a very weak and sick old man. Initially, the Wingfields seem like a normal family. As the play develops, it is revealed that each member of the family has their own form of escape from reality. The playwright uses several elements to signal escape. Williams incorporates the past as Amanda Wingfield’s crutch. It is apparent that she “is obsessed with the rituals and the values of her Southern upbringing” (Topham). He also uses the movies as a form of a getaway for Tom. Williams uses this symbol to show that Tom’s life is mundane so he “uses the movies to fill a void in his life” (Kullman).
