An engineering career can give options to a college-graduate that are hard to match. Engineering is a rewarding career path that requires hard work, and dedication. There is a possibility that some individuals do not have any prior understanding of what an engineer does, or what the specific duties of different types of engineers entitle. Engineering is an essential and learned profession. As members of this profession, engineers are likely to show the highest standards of honesty and integrity. Engineering has a straight and vital impact on the quality of life for all people. Any engineering career starts from the resume writing. Usually a resume consists of two parts: the list of things that you have done well in your life and the cover letter. When you want to advance in your field you must be able to obtain certifications in many different programs. When you have a certification it says something about what you know as an engineer, “Certifications provide status to those who have proven their knowledge and give employers a benchmark standard for measuring employee candidates” (Ricci, 2012). Being a mechanical design engineer is not easy, however mechanical design engineering is one of the oldest and most respected engineering disciplines. Some skills that a mechanical design engineer will use in an average day are: math, physics, and chemistry principles, not to mention their imagination.With a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, one could focus on standard menial duties such as a machine operator on the factory floor, yet with this degree and additional specific education, the same person would be able to move into advanced disciplines or work a combination of the two. The hard work and dedication of engineers can be easily seen by opening a window and viewing the structures that adorn the earth. The structures that civil engineers design and build define the culture of a society and help to keep pace with a constantly changing world.
Obstacles had never been obstructing my effort to succeed in life. As an engineer to be, it is important to me to be prepared for the hurdles in the real world. The world nowadays needs a person who could compete and has great abilities to stand on the same level as others. Multiple skills and critical opinion of an issue are essential for an engineer to jump into this challenging career. For me, a strategic planning and full preparation need to achieve the aim of being an expert engineer.
Depending on the particular field of engineering, engineers might find themselves testing, maintaining, and using computers to design products. Other engineers, however, might find themselves on construction sites, monitoring, directing, and solving issues on-site. A license in engineering is required for an engineer who offers their services to the public, obtained by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam after graduating from college as well as the Principles and Practicing of Engineering exam after enough work experience is gained. Similarly, a US citizenship is almost always required for an engineer working for the federal government (“Engineers”).
Throughout my lifetime, I have never had to think very much about the working world and everything that went with it. All through high school I took classes I liked or thought would be interesting to me, but never thought that all of those classes were preparing me for what was to come. Before I knew it, it was time to go to college. The four years of high school had flown by and now it was time to choose a major for college. I had never given much thought as to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The only real occupations that I had really gotten to experience were teaching, the jobs that my parents had, and others such as doctors, dentist, most of the occupations that everyone sees while they are growing up. When I finally decided on my major, I chose engineering, but I didn’t know if I would like it or not. The only prior knowledge I had about it was the fact that my grandfather was an electrical and chemical engineer, and that my parents and teachers said that I would be good at engineering. Recently I have been interested in civil engineering, but what does one do with such a degree? What opportunities are available to a person with a degree in civil engineering on the job market? The broad curriculum that covers many different fields of engineering make civil engineering a major that allows a person to work in nearly any field they wish.
It seems that every era from ancient times to modern times has engineers playing a strong role in the development of society; they build many structures that identify that culture and time period. Engineers create something out of an idea; they fill a need and fulfill a dream such as a skyscraper that no one thought would ever be possible. “Scientists investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been” (Albert Einstein).
