They have playboy models advertising for cars, boats and body lotion. They use a women’s body to advertise for their products. Of going through many procedures to make them look “thin” or “ordinary” because they can no longer be happy with themselves because of the media’s interference with adolescent girls images. Anorexia and bulimia are one of the main causes along with the media as to why adolescent girls are always slightly underweight and devastating skinny.
Models shown in all forms of popular media are often under what is considered healthy body weight, which sends a powerful message that women must sacrifice their health to be considered attractive by societal standards. When we look at women images, we will see they are thin, beautiful, sexy, and fashionable. They are different from average women. The women who see perfect women images every moment are not pleased with their appearance. In addition, they are losing their self-esteems, because they believe that they must look more beautiful, sexier, and more fashionable.
Not only do magazines try to portray the “perfect image,” but also television advertisements try to achieve this representation of the perfect body. Television broadcasts events and shows like “Miss America,” and “Baywatch” that represent unrealistic body types for ordinary women. To accomplish the goal of looking like the models being displayed all over the media, women think they need to diet. If it was dieting just for the fact of making women feel better, it would be all right, but the purpose of most people is different. When women compare themselves to models and pictures of people in advertisements, they believe the only way they will get noticed is if they also appear the in the same image of the models.
I agree however I feel that is done in such a manner that girl feel as if they must exhaust the media’s advice on fitness and health and use these methods in order to obtain the picture perfect body image that they see on TV and in magazines. The media would like for them to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty for their own selfish benefit to solicit their industry. However if we don’t give in to medias perception of perfection the media will have to change.Certain companies like Dove have realized the medias negative effect on adolescent girls and has taking matters into their own hands by publishing a new ad with healthier looking model. This ad is one step in the right direction to building back up young girls self esteem and making them comfortable with their bodies.
The reason why this advertisement was chosen is because of its irony. Victoria’s Secret is attempting to promote healthy bodies, and encouraging women to love the skin that they are in, which is contradicting to the image that is portrayed in the campaign. Advertisements intend to have very specific messages (Valenti, 2007). As individuals attempt to decode these messages, women get an idea of what the media believes beauty is, causing multimillion dollar industries due to lack of self esteem (Joey, 2003). Often times, magazines use images of youthful looking models to promote lingerie.
The media builds the idea of distorted body images, creating a belief that beauty is achieved through body weight. America, but women and girls more specifically, is so consumed with having a perfect, skinny body. It is believed that mass media aids in encouraging these thoughts, thoughts of unrealistically thin body ideals, ideals generally unattainable for many females. Standards of thinness are seen in almost every image in the media; these images represent the sociocultural model of attractiveness. When females are constantly exposed to images like this, they are sent a message about how they must appear in order to be judged as attractive.
Beauty pageants are harmful not only to ordinary women but also to the entire society because they give women the feeling that they are inadequate and ugly, leading to dieting and eating disorders, cosmetic surgery, and has a larger effect on men's attitude towards women. A major effect of beauty pageants on women is that they encourage feelings of inadequacy and present an unrealistic ideal that is often unattainable. The skinny models on such platforms, that are their main focus, come across to millions of female viewers as a set standard that should be maintained in order to look beautiful and achieve success in life. Having idealistic features such as a body size 0, flawless skin, a certain height, and shiny long brown hair becomes the most important objective in the lives of women. If unable to fulfill these desires, it leads to lower self-esteem and self-perception.
The pageants objectify woman creating a homogenous unachievable model of attractiveness that promotes poor self-image among girls (Beauty Pageants”). Often thin models are suffering from eating disorders of their own and girls are looking up to them as “body goals” which just is not right and can lead to the girls themselves having eating disorders. Models should be a healthy weight, they would still look great and it would have a positive effect of the girls who are looking up to the models. Plastic and cosmetic surgery is another effect media has had, more females are taking the “easier” root and getting surgeries to like the way they look. Girls under eighteen should not get surgery, the risks are too high.
When mothers exercise obsessively, diet constantly, or make derogatory comments about their own appearance it influences the daughter because mothers are the most influential role model for most girls. Fathers also need to be more cautious of how they respond to the media images of sexy, thin women. There have been campaigns started by companies about real beauty that try to teach girls that they should appreciate who they are. The campaigns try to reject the ideal body image and explain that some beauty in the media is not attainable. The company Dove has created a great campaign about Real Beauty.
On the other hand, there is a large audience of contemporary females suffering from dissatisfaction or shame towards one’s appearances. This is because women are taught to base their self-esteem and self-worth upon what others consider attractive. Therefore, I believe the social comparison about the aesthetics of body image has done enough to amplify the detrimental effects such as pathological and disordered thoughts. The effects of over-obsession on cosmetic surgery and disordered eating have become today’s status symbols and societal norms. It is important for every individual to accept and internalise the socially sanctioned standards of beauty.
