How do you think video games can help you? It is actually one of the hardest questions to answer. It is a real mystery to most people. They can help you and harm you in many different ways. Researchers have been trying to find the answer for so many years now. They found since 2004 to present day, so many people play video games that we have built up 50 billion hours total of playing video games which almost adds up to 5.9 million years of gaming time in total. That is so long that it sounds like the early settlers like Mesopotamia had been playing video games! There are many types of video games but here are some examples I found: Violent, pro-Social, productive and horror. Violent games are most likely the games people encourage you not to play because they can cause huge amounts of built up aggression over the time that you play the games. They can also sometimes cause anti-social disorders and many different negative effects in your mind. The only good effect is it gives you good aiming skills at throwing or punching or whatever violent game you play. Some violent games include Call of Duty, Halo and some other violent games. Next there is horror. They are games that will probably make you have nightmares at night. Like horror movies, they are least recommended. They can almost have the same effect as violent games but you will keep thinking about it for a long time (possibly forever). Another effect is that if you play the game over and over again, you will probably get used to these types of games and be good at them which is the only good effect. Horror games include: Slender, Amnesia, etc. Also there is productive. These games are the most likely to be helpful with learning skills like having a better imag... ... middle of paper ... ...orse. Video games do not make us more intelligent. They may however, make us more prone to violence and sex. Video games are preventing us from screening out distractions and making thinking deeply a difficult task. Our brains become overwhelmed when multitasking. Moreover, Johnson states “... a modern video game can take forty hours to complete”. Forty hours keep kids from homework and as Rachael Rettner states in livescience, “The results show that boys given a PlayStation II are slower to progress in their reading and writing skills and have more learning problems reported by their teachers than those not given a system”. The sole reason studies come back positive for video games being productive is due to the fact that they test a regular video gamer with a non-gamer. Regular video gamers will do better in the study because the more they play, the better they get. Not many realize the effect of these “fully realized imaginary worlds”, it is making it harder for people to differentiate their virtual life with their real

McClellan’s (2005) article reports that according to Johnson’s study, computer games are essentially brain exercises that improve the psychological fitness holistically because they require continuous focus, strategic decision-making, and creative thinking. Video games, another form of screen technology, have also been found to improve these aspects which are important as children often find gaming fun and this must be utilised productively to aid the development of cognition / mental acumen. Studies have shown that there is a wide variety of physical and behavioral effects that video games can have on their players.
I have been playing video games since I was in kindergarten and I believe that they have been invaluable to my intellectual development. I owe about one third of my English vocabulary to video games. Strategy games such as Age of Empires and Age of Mythology have taught me planning and resource management, as well as a great deal about the history and culture of human civilizations. Shooters such as Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament have taught me how to quickly make decisions while under stress, and have enhanced my hand-eye coordination and spatial orientation. Adventure and puzzle games such as Darksiders and Minesweeper have taught me problem solving and logical reasoning, in addition to improving my ability to concentrate and greatly increasing my perseverance.
Video game play can have both positive and negative effects on children and adolescents, and adults should seek to minimize the negative effects while maximizing the positive effects by staying informed about games and establishing rules about the amount and type of video game play.
One way in which video games can be beneficial is by supporting individuals’ intellectual development in the areas of problem solving and logic. Games like Cut the Rope, Angry Birds and The Incredible Machine require players to solve a puzzle under time limited conditions. When people are playing these games, they practice their critical thinking skills and creativity, which are both important components of intelligence.
