Yves Germain Patrick Leitch 5/27/2014 Chernobyl Essay On April 26, 1986 Ukraine experienced an unprecedented nuclear disaster, and over 200 times the radiation that was released in Hiroshima and Nagasaki seeped out into the atmosphere; this unfortunate event was given the name the Chernobyl disaster. The plant operators were in violation of the safety regulations, when they turned off vital control systems at the plants reactor number four and they allowed it to reach a level of low power which caused a series of catastrophic events. The day prior to the incident the operators at the plant were preparing conduct a one-time routine maintenance shutdown of the reactor number four. Although as a result of their negligence they disabled the automatic shutdown mechanisms, and there was no way to stop the explosion; which caused the 1,000 ton plate that covered the reactor core to detach releasing radiation into the atmosphere. As a result of the events that took place, the people’s lives that lived in the vicinity would never be the same and neither would the environment. The clean-up effort began immediately after the incident; 116,000 people had to be relocated. There were 200 people hospitalized as a result of exposure to the radiation and they were told that the effects to the exposure may not begin to show for years. The Russian government estimates that there were between 300,000 to 600,000 emergency workers involved in the clean-up effort. They were involved in the decontamination and also in the major construction projects; such as setting up homes for the workers and the evacuees. It is estimated that around 64 people died as a result of being directly exposed to the radiation; although the Russian government estim... ... middle of paper ... ... they denied the occurrence until they could not any more. The Russian government was also wrong for transporting people to the hospital and not letting the hospital know anything about the incident or the radiation exposure; they simply told the employees to clear the hospital from the existing patients. This incident should be used as a lesson learned to any country who deals with nuclear technology, it is important to take every single possible precaution to avoid a situation like the Chernobyl disaster from occurring again. While writing this essay I came to the conclusion that the risks do not out way the rewards; when radiation is released plants, animals, the environment and humans lives are forever changed. It may be a good idea to find a safe technology to replace nuclear plants, so we do not have to worry about a disaster like Chernobyl occurring again.
