Bullying was a thing of the past, when lunch money was taken and students where verbally aggressive with students that displays timid characteristics. The latest way to communicate is through social networking creating a more aggressive and invisible way for bullies to attack the innocent. Social media has honestly created an open invitation for bullying.
“Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration” (WhatIs.com). This is the way people communicate with friends, family, co-workers, and class mates. Special events such as anniversaries, parties and vacations are advertised and sent over social media as a group message. Friends and family members can stay in contact with each other around the clock. Social media is a unique way of communicating with people all over the world. Children are more prone to becoming bullies or being bullied. Parents do not monitor the things their children are posting about themselves and others. There are not any repercussions for a bully to face if they stay anonymous and hide behind their cruel words. Boundaries are crossed “through social media, including name-calling, teasing, making threats, and spreading rumors” (Rowell 18).
