Caroline Stevermer, an American novelist, once wrote, “How dreadful… to be caught up in a game and have no idea of the rules.” Indeed, the quest for eternal prosperity bares an ancient path that allures pursuers into a deep state of oblivion. As one follows this trail, their vision of reality soon becomes blurred by their dreams of triumph. Ultimately, this enduring road guides an innocent pursuer onto the board of another’s game to become their lifeless pawn. Prostitution is this game. This immoral act involves the exchange of sexual services for financial gain. In Canada, the act of prostitution has never been a crime, but the government has combated this atrocity through criminalizing all activities surrounding the transaction. However, …show more content…
The vile act of prostitution should be made illegal in Canada as a result of the government’s duty to enforce the constitution, the various social impacts prostitution has on the nation, and the health impacts commonly known to affect individuals in the …show more content…
The logic behind this argument is that by bringing the lurking shadows of this corrupt world into the light, the criminal aspect would disappear. In theory, individuals would be less likely to be involved in sex trafficking with the aid of government regulation. However, this reasoning overlooks the failed attempts made by other countries to create a society where prostitution can coincide with the security of the nation. In Germany, the naive belief that legalized prostitution would eliminate illegal activities turned out be a sheer fantasy. Since prostitution was made legal in Germany, human trafficking crimes have increased by 70% and much of these offences involve youth. The strengthening of sex markets ultimately led to the deterioration of the dignity of trafficked victims within the community. Additionally, German officers complain that they rarely get access to enter the premises of brothels where prostitution occurs. Without the protection from the police, the nation is left vulnerable to the disease of prostitution. This destruction created by the legalization of prostitution in Germany showcases the inability of prostitution to coexist with a secure
Many argue that prostitution is along the same line as any other business transaction considering similar actions taken to go through the process. I will argue that performing a consensual or nonconsensual sexual act including a transfer of money cannot be considered as one. In this essay, I will be focusing on women in the Canadian sex trade and how the service they provide is not a legitimate purchase. There are several factors to assist this argument that include the facts and terminology behind businesses, transactions, employment, legality, and the act being performed. The process for an individual to acquire a prostitute contains a transaction through an exchange of money, but is it a business transaction, no.
Prostitution is one of the oldest professions in history. In this modern age there are several classes of prostitutes with several methods of finding work, but they still face violence in their business. Though prostitutes are frowned upon by society and treated as criminals, under the law they should not be scrutinized by the morals of the people. Prostitutes frequently feel they have no options due to their illegal work, should they be assaulted they cannot turn to the police since many officers refuse to aid them as criminals. Prostitution should be regulated to fight human trafficking, increase quality of life for the women working in the industry, and generate taxes for the government while reducing the cost of dealing with prostitution.
In 2007, three prostitutes, Terri-Jean Bedford, Amy Lebovitch, and Valerie Scott came to the Canadian government to challenge the current prostitution laws after pending charges were laid against them for illegal acts prostitution (Chez Stella, 2013). The Bedford Case has opened up a debate on whether prostitution should be decriminalized in Canada. Through my research, I offer a comparative analysis of four approaches to prostitution, which aid in illustrating the effects that decriminalization would have on prostitutes, and women as a whole. The four states that I have compared are Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Australia. These countries each hold different views and policies on prostitution. Canada is currently criminalized, the Netherlands is a state in which prostitution is legalized, Sweden advocates abolitionism, and in Australia, prostitution is decriminalized. Through careful analysis I have determined the effectiveness of each of the policies, and which system I believe would be best for Canada’s future. Based on this investigation, I advocate that Canada ought to adapt a similar approach to Australia, decriminalizing prostitution as a means for social, economic, and legal stability for women. It is through decriminalization that prostitutes will have the opportunity to be actively involved in the community, and no longer marginalized members of society.
Prostitution in Canada has had a long history. Prostitution is the exchange of money in return for sexual favors. The most commonly thought of form of prostitution is street-based but this makes up a portion of the trade. Other forms include escort services and brothels, to name a few. Prostitution has been legal in Canada for hundreds of years, as Canada inherited their laws from England, but there have been several laws aimed at preventing it. These laws include prohibitions on brothels, communication in public for the purpose of prostitution, and making a living off of prostitution. Therefore, while prostitution itself is not illegal, it is very difficult to engage in it without breaking the law. This leads to a lot of misunderstanding, as many men are not aware that these various laws exist, only knowing that prostitution itself is legal. In support of this, Wortley, Fischer, and Webster (2002) found that 17% of Ontario men who had been arrested under the communication or solicitation law in Ontario were apparently unaware that it was illegal to talk to a prostitute about buying sex (Morton 2012).
The truth is, though, that prostitution is not as harmless or victimless as it seems. In fact, all too often the women involved in the trade are not even working out of their own free will. Aside from the brutal realities of forced prostitution, other problems lurk beneath the surface, as well; but could the harm associated with prostitution be alleviated through decriminalization? It is impossible to know for certain exactly what would happen were legal prostitution a reality, but in order to effectively evaluate the consequences of such a change, the potential dangers and benefits must be considered.
CTV News shared breaking news on October, 23, 2013 that four Romanian women were found being victimized to human trafficking in Montreal. These women were lured to Canada hoping that they would find a better future but instead were forced into prostitution (2013). Human trafficking is an issue that is rarely acknowledged by Canadians. Most people are either unaware of the problem or do not recognize it as something that is happening in their own backyard. Although Canadians are exposed to the severity of human trafficking in other countries, Canadian citizens are unaware of the fact that Canada is not only a transit point for the United States but also a destination country. Information from the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre states “The RCMP estimates that 600-800 persons are trafficked into Canada annually, predominantly for sexual purposes, also additional 1,500-2,200 people are trafficked through Canada and into the United states” (2010). Canada is a source of transit and destination for human trafficking, some of the victims being as young as twelve years old (Human trafficking, 2010). The definition of what human trafficking is focusing on who the victims are and who the traffickers, the increase in trafficking due to globalization, and the role Canada plays in preventing it will all be explained further.
“There is no difference in work in which a women sells her hands, such as a typist, and a work in which a women sells her vagina, as in sex work.” Claims author Lacy Sloan. In today’s society, many people believe that prostitution is an immoral act. It is the world’s oldest profession and because it has been long condemned, sex workers are stigmatized from mainstream society (ProQuest Staff). However, the act of purchasing sex between consenting adults should not be prohibited by the government, but regulated for society's overall best interests. Prostitution is illegal and as a consequence prostitutes are often victims of violence and sexual assault; therefore, prostitution should be legalized and regulated to ensure the safety of sex workers.
Firstly, prostitution is bad. According to Aziza Ahmed journalist at foreign policy magazine shares that the “coalition trafficking women” contends that “sex work is a dangerous phenomenon that routinely violates women rights and perpetuates their subordination to men.” Thus, as you see legalizing prostitution will not address the real problem. Ahmed goes on to say that there is no difference between sex work and human trafficking. Both control people with the purpose of making money. Therefore, the demand for sex workers will not be effected. Ahmed also shares a horrifying statistic that in the tiny country of Cambodia there are up to 100,000 “trafficked” women and children. Thus, the demand for sex workers is high. Secondly, we can get rid of prostitution by making it legal. Ahmed shares a successful model used in Sweden, Norway, and Iceland. In this model the clients are charged with breaking the law, instead of the sex workers. Therefore, this is positive evidence that prostitution can be made illegal. Ahmed also states that Germany has also bought the successful model making the johns and clients criminals. Thus, as clients and johns are arrested this will help to stop prostitution. Thirdly, rescue attempts have not been positive. Ahmed says that in one rescue in Thai Brothel the sex workers feel like they had been arrested and not rescued. Therefore, ass you can see well intended

Although throughout much of the beginnings of our country the act of adultery was rampant, prostitution has always been viewed in a negative light in the United States. The mass adultery even went so far as to quell the act of prostitution due to the fact that they were simply were not needed (Esselstyn 1968). Throughout most of the ninetieth and twentieth centuries prostitution was associated with other socially immoral objects and act, such as the use of drugs, alcohol, and also the act of gambling. While society viewed these as the true threats to society, they view prostitution a...

If it were to be decriminalized, they would be safer and healthier.” Prostitutes, scared of legal consequences, are less likely to report back to the police about crimes performed against them, and they are less likely to receive medical information about STD’s or use sexually transmitted disease preventing condoms because they fear that their customers will report them to the police if the workers choose to not give them sex without the condoms. Next, Haltinwanger makes the appeal to emotions, or pathos, by using the condition of safety for the workers by inferring that “One of the keys to combatting sex-based human trafficking is opening up the communication waves and exposing traffickers. We can't do this while prostitution remains illegal, which stigmatizes sex workers and pushes them to the fringes of society.” Human trafficking continues to plague America, and it only becomes worse as more people are stolen and unable to be found. With the legalization of prostitution would come the ability for police to potentially receive more communication with human traffickers, and hopefully, more sex workers would seek the assistance of authorities and bring in information in on how to prevent more potential sex trafficking cases. Among the other rhetorical devices used, Haltiwanger uses his logical appeal by stating that the legalization of this work will bring more economic prosperity to America by expressing that “As long as prostitution remains illegal in the United States, those within the industry will pay no taxes.” If this act
Prostitution is the occupational service where sexual acts are exchanged for payment. Opinions of prostitution have changed drastically over the course of half a century, and are being debated worldwide. Prostitution is a very controversial topic, however there are claims that legalizing prostitution could create an overall safer environment, not only for the sex workers but the rest of society. There has been many alterations in prostitution laws and enforcement practices in several countries. Many nations have created new laws or intensified existing penalties for prostitution-related offences such as soliciting sex, purchasing sex, or pimping. Some other societies are experimenting with policies that securitize prostitution. The claims proposing these regulations are important because they are directly opposed to both the conventional benefits of prostitution and the specific allegations of anti-prostitution crusaders. In Canada and the UK, the exchange of sex for money is not illegal. However, the activities that go along with prostitution are criminal offences.“In March 2012, the Ontario Court of Appeal upheld a ban on establishments for the purposes of prostitution, which effectively makes street prostitution illegal. In the US, most jurisdictions, prostitution, solicitation, or agreeing to engage in an act of prostitution are classified as illegal. With the exception of licensed brothels in certain areas in Nevada. In the Netherlands, prostitution was legalized in the mid-1800s but it wasn’t until recently, the 1980s sex work became a legal profession. Restrictions on brothels and pimping were lifted in October 2000 and the industry is now securitized by labour law. Prostitutes are registered as legal workers....
In many cases society has tried to tell you that prostitution is bad, weather it is through movies, books, religious text and many other influential aspects of society, due to the nature of the people who they portray in the act. I believe if people were properly educated into the science of sex, having sex for money would not be considered such a bad thing. When I attended prep school, I met many other kids from Europe, and let’s sat they were a little more comfortable with their sexuality, and in a few of their countries prostitution was even legal.
Prostitution should not be legalized because it offers no real benefits. The main reason people believe prostitution should be legalized is because they think it will boost the economy. According to Nevada State Tax Examiner Ruth Jones, “the state does not reap the rewards of this million-dollar industry. There are no state taxes and because it is up to each individual county to decide if it wants to allow prostitution within its borders, the only real revenue the state sees come from sales tax on bar sales” (Gormley). If the state is not receiving money for legalized prostitution, then how can it boost the economy? How is it beneficial to society? Another negative effect of legalized prostitution is human trafficking. Legalized prostitution increases the risk of human trafficking. Seo-Yeong Cho of the German Institute for Economic Research, Axel Dreher of the University of Heidelberg, and Eric Neumayer of the London School of Economics and Political Science conducted a study on the correlation between legalized prostitution and human trafficking. They concluded that countries with legalized prostitution report a greater incidence of human trafficking inflows. They also found the ...
