During the narrative observation, the child spent the majority of the time expressing her creativity and artistic abilities through various crafts, such as coloring, painting and drawing. The process of creating each of her projects displayed a variety of fine and gross motor skills that she has developed or expanded through the course of her development. When drawing with crayons, the child held the Crayola at an angle within her hand while also having her thumb and index finger correctly positioned, also known as the Pincer grasp (Chapter 4 Lecture). Initially, the mother brought the child into the kitchen of the house, along with a backpack of the child 's necessities. The child was quick to notice a morning snack, Goldfish, that was awaiting her at the table. In this instance, the Goldfish served as a distraction from the situation, as the child immediately began consuming the snack. While the child was engulfed in her snack, the mother kissed her and told her she loved her. Without a change in behavior, the child also exchanged goodbyes. While the child was glancing down and playing with her snack, the mother snuck out of the house. After a few seconds, the child looked up from the food. She causally looked around the room. Soon after, she spotted her mother out the window as she was climbing into her car. The child glared out the window while waving goodbye, which is a conventional gesture that the child learned at an early age (Chapter 6 Lecture). Once the car drove away, the child ceased her waving and continued eating her Goldfish for the remainder of the observation. Overall, the child regulated her emotions well upon the transition. She was content and calm with her mother 's departure, as if it were a habitual routine. According the Vygotsky, children of this age turn social dialogue into private speech, which results in the self-regulation of actions (page 199). After several hours, the mother returned for the reunion with the child. The mother quietly entered the house and stood in the doorway of the living room. I did my classroom observation at Brooklyn Preschool of Science (BPOS), located in the neighborhood of Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York. BPOS is a small school serving a little over 100 students from 2 years old to pre-kindergarten. I had the opportunity to do my observation in the pre-k classroom, which consisted of 17 students. On the day of my observation, the teacher had all the students seated in the circle time area for a read-aloud. She explained to them that she is going to read a fun and exciting book to them and that she wants them to pay close attention to what the book is about because she is going to ask them questions in the end. When I entered the toddler classroom at the Children’s ministry, the first detail that I noticed was the great effort for security and protection for every child that was dropped off. Every individual in the classroom were required to wear badges to indicate that they were safe to work with the children. Once I walked into the main room where the children were being cared for I noticed that there were a great verity of temperaments displayed by the children. Some children appeared to be “easy” (not crying or being fussy), and were playing with the toys. During this assignment, I needed to observe infant/toddler from birth to 36 months. The observation was for 30 minutes while the infants interact with the world. While the observation, I created a running record observation to keep track of the developmental domains. The observation took place in the ECE classroom. There were three children which were Charlotte, Loui, and Benjamin. They were placed in the center of the class where there was different kinds of toys. During the observation, Charlotte and Loui were interacting with one another. However, Benjamin wasn’t interacting at all. Loui interacted with classmates and went outside the circle to get some toys.
Children are complex, and the way a child develops differs from individual to individual. The study of children is a field that researchers, scientists, theorists and educators have been exploring for decades. CHYS 1F90 studies the foundations of childhood development and allows the students to look at the way children develop through multiple lenses. Many conclusions have been drawn, observing how, when and why children develop the way they do. Jerry and Samantha are both grade one students who are unrelated. Although these two students are both the same age, they are different on a variety of accounts. Jerry is a shy and introverted boy who quickly becomes uncomfortable while talking to adults, teachers and peers, contrariwise Samantha is immensely confident and demonstrates extroversion around others. After analyzing both Jerry and Samantha through a biological, learning theorist and psychoanalytical lens, the reasons for the first-graders differences are clear. Depending on the lens in which an individual looks through when analyzing the development of children, interesting and intriguing conclusions can be drawn regarding the broad topic of understanding how children develop.
The facility I did my observation at was Tutor Time in Fairfield, and I arrived there at 3:15pm. When I arrived there, I could instantly see that it was a child centered program by the feel of the artwork the kids had made that were on the walls, the passing classrooms and it smelled like sugar cookies throughout the building. It was very quiet in the office area and in the halls when I was walking to the class of preschoolers.
To begin, my observation was at Webster Elementary School, a school placed in the city surrounded by houses and other schools. The specific classroom I am observing is full of Kindergarten students who seem to very advanced than I had imagined. The classroom walls are brick and white, but the classroom teacher Mrs. O'Brien does an amazing job keeping the space use for both an upbeat and educational vibe, especially for environmental print. Observation is very important in young children because that is how you get to know a child better. While observing how a child interacts with their peers, adults, and how they behave in different settings, you are getting to know the child without speaking to them.

Another rather consistent observation I saw was the indication that most children used their parent as a secure base. A secure base is provided through a relationship that harbors one or more responsive caregivers who meets the child’s needs and to whom the child can turn to as a safe haven, when upset or distraught. This relationship can be seen in many of the observations I made. The one that stands out the most and that clearly depicts how a child uses a secure base is Susy. Susy used her parents as secure base when she was frightened by the boy that was older than her and whom she didn’t know. She ran to her parents for protection and comfort from the stranger. In early childhood, the physical, cognitive, language and psychosocial domains of development are equally important (WHO). For these reasons, the observer would analyze normal growth and development of early childhood using various development theories in this observation paper. For observing the subject’s behaviors and social interaction with others, the observer went to one of Jewish friends’ house to have dinner in Passover holiday, is one of the best known Jewish holidays for seven-days. The house has two floors and grass garden. Almost 30 people attended at the celebration. Most people were family and friends. There were roughly 13 children stayed in the house with their parents. Most of children were 5 to 10-year-olds. For exploring growth and development in early childhood, the observer chose one of girl, is a six-years-olds, whose name is IL. The observer monitored her behavior for 5 hours before and after dinner, was able estimate IL’s age, height, weight, physical appearance, actions, verbalizations, emotions, type of play/activity and interaction with others. First of all, her physical appearances were observed that her height and weight seemed like 120-125cm and 20 kg. She looked like taller and skinner compared to other peers in that house. She did not have two upper front teeth. The observer assumed her level of physical development using by the growth chart. Following the curve in the chart, IL’s rate of growth is normal, and also her height and weight are in balance. Also, gross motor skills were observed during that time. This paper will explore my findings of my observation of a young boy, age 28 months, named Jax. Jax is fun little man and happens to be my nephew. I will discuss the attributes and characteristics of Jax that I witnessed in the few hours that I had observed him. Starting with motor development skills, I observed that Jax is a very favorable walker. He is well coordinated, and loves to run. Still, just like any two-year-old, he still stumbles frequently. He loves to play with his toys and can pick up and grasp his toys well. He is great at maneuvering his toys and putting them where he wants them. I did notice that he did favor his right hand regularly. Jax did love to throw things, and catch them as well. However, he seemed to be a bit better at catching things, more so than he was at throwing
Child development and growth observation can be quite fascinating considering the uniqueness of each child. As children grow, they normally develop and acquire new skills whether complex or not. The abilities experienced by each child progresses differently that is it depends on the nurturing given by the parent or guardian and on the characteristics that they inherit.
