The Effects of Child Abuse In our world today many children are experiencing child abuse. When it comes to child abuse it can be shown in many forms such as, physical, sexual or emotional maltreatment or neglect of a child or children. Child abuse is divided into four different categories which are physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. For the many American that experiences some types of abuse can suffer from longs term and short term effects throughout their life time. On average, 2000 children a year die from child abuse or neglect in the United States and is estimated that that figure is actually much higher (Jelic Tuscic, 25). This essay will discuss the effects of sexual and emotional abuse, the effects of physical abuse, and the effects of childhood abuse in the elderly. According to many studies that have been done on sexual and emotional abuse in childhood, it have been shown that these types of abuse have effects on a person that are persistent throughout their lifetime in many different forms of psychological and physiological issues. Many of these issues are so hard to directly link it to child abuse because there are so many other things that may cause these issues to arise. A physically abused child will possess something on their outward appearance or problems in their bodies that can be directly linked to child abuse or neglect. “Abuse in early childhood may lead to irregular formation of certain parts of the child’s brain, which leads to consequences in cognitive, speech, or socio-emotional development, and have an overall negative effect on mental health in general.” (Jelic Tuscic, 26). Other effects that can occur during physical abuse are hyper-arousal in the brain, hyperactivity, sleeping difficulties, and other things such as visual, motor, and cognitive damage. The more visible injuries include bruises, fractures, damaged tissues and internal organs which often comes from corporal punishment or physical child abuse. Besides the visible effects of physical child abuse, there are also many nonvisible effects that many children who are physically abuse such as aggression, risky behavior, running away from home, lying and delinquency, anti-social behavior, and other mental health problems. Many children who have been physically abused tend to be twice as aggressive towards their peers who have not been abused (Jelic Tuscic, 27).
