Child abuse and neglect has become a growing epidemic in the world. “An estimated 702,000 children were victims of abuse and neglect in 2014” (National Statistics on Child Abuse, 2014). Abuse comes in many different forms; sexual, physical, emotional, and neglect. Childhood abuse and neglect cause both long and short term impacts on children. It also affects many aspects of their lives. It is important that this is prevented. Prevention is the only way to stop innocent children from suffering more harm. Every day a child is abused and could possibly lose his/her life. “1,825 children are abused or neglected each day in the United States” (Child Abuse Statistics, 2016). Some examples of mandated reporters are, teachers, and medical providers, daycare workers, and police officers. In the article, Preservice Teachers’ Sources of Information on Mandated Reporting of Child Sexual Abuse, they say that, “Teachers in many countries are mandated by law, professional codes, or education authorities to report child abuse and neglect, including child sexual abuse. However, teachers may not receive adequate preparation for such sensitive interventions, as preservice teacher education degrees provide very few or no compulsory courses on child protection and crucially related, lifelong health and well-being issues” (The decision-making processes adopted by rurally located mandated professional…, 2012). Child abuse is when a parent or care giver causes injury, death or emotional harm, through action or failing action, or by putting a child at serious risk of harm. Children who are being sexually abused will show many signs, but they will not all be the same. Child abuse and neglect is a very serious issue that can not be taken lightly. We need to provide continuing public education and professional training. Few people fail to report because they want children to suffer abuse and neglect. Likewise, few people make deliberately false reports. Most involve an honest desire to protect children coupled with confusion about what conditions are reportable. Educational efforts should emphasize the conditions that do not justify a report, as well as those that do.
Parents who take out anger on their kids not only place them in a dangerous position physically, but they harm them emotionally and mentally as well. Child abuse can be described as many different things. One of the more common forms of abuse is neglect. As stated by James W. Vander, in the book Human Development, "neglect is defined as the absence of adequate social, emotional, or physical care." (Vander, 1997). This could include undernourishment, a mother not paying attention to a sick or hurt child, or even a guardian not sharing happiness with his or her child. Physical abuse is defined by Vander as "nonaccidental physical attack on or injury to children by the individuals caring for them." (Vander, 1997). This type of abuse is where the hitting, yelling, spanking, and even sexual abuse come into play. Children are not only hurt in the present time of growing up, but in the future as well. This problem of abuse harms many individuals each day, and the repercussions are felt by all of society.
Children who have been abused are left with more than just physical scars. They have many psychological, emotional, and behavioral problems as well. Their social lives are affected dramatically, and they suffer lifelong effects. (Lambert) Children tend to be emotionally disturbed years after the abuse, many have IQ scores lower than average, and some have even been classified as mentally retarded. Children who have been abused also show signs of personality and neurological changes. (Oates 119) Sexual abuse has been linked to nightmares, bed wetting, sadness, clinging behavior, and anxiety. Children also showed more aggressive and anti-social behaviors. (Oates 127) Adults who were sexually abused are more prone to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and drug or alcohol problems. (Oates 132-133) Studies show overwhelming evidence of the effects abuse can have on a child, and the way the effects continue into their adult lives. (Oates 135)
What exactly is “Child Abuse and Neglect”? Sometimes it is hard to narrow down what exactly is unlawful when raising your children. The United States has had several laws and bills passed to protect children. There is a typical stereotype that only the poverty-stricken families are affected, but child however this is not true. The Charlotte metro area offers several programs and facilities that help abused children. Based on the current economy I believe the child abuse rate will increase.
Sexual abuse is another type of child abuse. It is any type of sexual activity that a child cannot understand or give consent to. Some examples of this are: fondling, oral-genital contact, genital or anal intercourse, exhibitionism, voyeurism and exposure to pornography (National Council On Child Abuse And Family Violence...) Some signs of sexual abuse are: the child has trouble sitting or standing,...
Neglect in children is harder to detect than that of child abuse. Neglect is more emotional than physical abuse. Although there may be no visible harm a child could be screaming for help. The earlier abused children get help, the greater chance they have to heal and break the cycle—rather than perpetuate it. Child abuse in the United States is a growing epidemic. Every year the number of reported cases, and missing children go up. This is caused mostly by lack of education about the different types of child abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Communities need to provide more resources to better educate the public about the types of abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Child abuse and neglect can be lessened by more resources, more education and to reach out to others.
The mistreatment of children is classified by four types of actions: physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect. Although, in recent years several steps have been taken to prevent the maltreatment of children it seems that child abuse is still prevalent in today's society. Countless children around the world suffer from some form of abuse and in many cases the same child experiences more than one. There is no exact number of victims because it difficult to measure the exact amount of children going through abuse. Child abuse almost always occurs in private, and because abuse is often hidden from view and its victims may be too young or too frightened to speak out, experts in child welfare suggest that its true prevalence

The effects of child abuse are multiple. The pain and trauma the abused child goes through is just a small part of how this cauldron of hidden depravity in our society affects all of us. Wrecked lives can be seen in persons of all ages and in all walks of life. Society as a whole is also effected by child abuse both in negative and positive ways. In this essay I will present some of the factor and results of this violent behavior on individuals as well as our culture.
The media’s role in reporting child abuse is to help deter child abuse perpetrators and to inform the public. The media has the ability to make a negative or positive impact on the preception of child abuse. The publications about child abuse inform the public about different types of child abuse and neglect and incidents that happen within their community, and how to report child abuse. They serve to “sensitize, arouse public opinion on issues, influence policymakers, and call problem agencies to account” (McDevitt, p. 270, 1996).
Statistics of child sexual abuse are highly controversial due to the fact that reporting and compilation of this information is incomplete and cannot be fully controlled. But from the information that can be gathered it is evident that there is extreme truth that sexual abus...
Lastly, threatening signs of sexual abuse can include difficulty walking or sitting, premature understanding of sex, and pain in the genital area. Wetting or soiling accidents that are unrelated to toilet training can also be a warning sign.
