Introduction

In this reflective essay, I will be using the Driscoll’s model of reflection to talk about how my knowledge of quality nursing care has improved since the commencement of this module. Quality nursing care has helped me develop various nursing strategies that will guide me in my first placement and throughout my career in nursing. Furthermore, it has taught me about communicating effectively with patients, I have learnt about verbal communication such as paraphrasing when communicating with patients to ensure that what said is properly understood. I have learnt not to make assumptions about patients and putting them in the middle of their care, taking into account their preferences.

(At the beginning of this module, my definition of Quality nursing was my ability to…..?) My definition of Quality nursing care at the beginning of the module was being able (apt) to give safe and effective care to patients tailored to their individual needs. Based on my experience as a care assistant, I thought quality nursing care was about meeting the: social, physical, emotional, cognitive and cultural needs of patients. Similarly, I thought that as a nurse giving quality nursing care would include providing care with compassion, kindness and showing patients respect.
Subsequently, my understanding of Quality nursing care was for health professionals to abide by the national care standard of dignity, privacy, choice, safety, realising potential, equality and diversity when delivering care. To ensure quality nursing care, I will make sure that I communicate adequately with patients by spending time with them and get to know them further instead of just doing nursing tasks. I will also provide information to patients about their illness or condition including treatments and medication. I will also gain consent before undertaking any tasks or procedures with patients thereby giving them choice.
To give quality nursing care to patients, I will give good personal hygiene care by assisting patients who need it and promoting the independence of patients that can see to their personal care. I will also assist with eating and drinking when required so patients can get the right nutritional requirements needed. I will meet the toileting needs of patient and show patients respect and dignity at all times.
