Imagine a world without education where human history is totally forgotten by the young generation, and individuals are forced to live in their basic everyday life without having the power to change it. Such in balance or disorders are the growing problems that occur around the world, which were pointed out in many educational essays like “The Educated Student” By Barber, “The student and the University” by Bloom, and “Class in America – 2003” by Mantsios. These essays are among the many of their kind that address the status education in the modern world as being forgotten and lost behind all the technology and commercialization of education. Barber, he gave his main argument that explained his point of view on education. In his view he felt that the way we, as humans needed to unite together to stand against the growing terrorism threats which were happening around the world (September 11 2001), Barber believes that only education bring us all closer to each other along in dealing with the educational crisis (419). Sadly, Barber also points out in his essay that in order to achieve education in America, we have to stop the growing effect of commercialism on the young student 's mind that cause them to lose their connection to education. Barber’s main supporting plan for his argument was to shape the young minds of the students towards education in school, he also directed the student’s belief to his point of view that education was the only way to create a better world by not letting the growth of commercialism take over the young minds of student. Some might view it in the mind set of Barber as a problem of money and big corporation in America that feed student false information through advertisement, some might view it from the perspective of Bloom that the corruption in education might be caused by colleges being too specialize with their student majors in school that they don’t let student freely choose what they want to study. This leads to student give up on his or her education that results in the downfall of American educational system. Some even view, the problem with education in today 's society from Mantsios point of view, saying that separation in class between the poor and the rich in America prevents people from achieving their true potential in life causing the downfall of education. No matter how each author addresses the problems in education and the solution being different from each other, they all still send the reader a common idea that everyone in America believes in an American dream where the opportunity of someone to rise and become successful in life can be achieved through hard work and dedication. Education is taken for granted and should be recognized for the significance it possesses.
In “Idiot Nation,” Michael Moore discourses on the collapse of American education system and the three main reasons behind it: politicians’ ignorance, shortage of teachers, and the rise of Corporate America. Moore first points out how ignorant the President and politicians are by stating that the President cannot simply identify whether Africa is a nation or a continent. Next, Moore attributes the lack of funding in education to the fact that politicians prefer to build bomber than to improve our education system; this leads to shortage of resources, overpopulated classrooms, and decrease of books available for students. He then notes that the low salaries of teachers, which are caused by the insufficient funding of education, result in shortage of qualified teachers, leading to the failure of the education system. In addition, Moore discusses about the rise of Corporate America, which is another factor corrupting the education system. To get funding from Corporate America, schools diminish the time students have in class, by making students watch advertisements from businesses and help businesses conduct research during class time. Throughout his excerpt, Moore uses exemplification, surprising statistics, rhetorical questions, and simple but clear reasoning to effectively express his ideas and convince readers of his arguments.
Many people believe that “having an economy that places a greater value on skills and education is a good thing” and that is the thing that is needed to improve people’s lives and futures (Baicker, Lazear). If what our economy is trying to do a good thing they why are so many students still suffering? The main issues are the low-income education that many students have. Many schools are getting money from the government but that is not enough to pay for everything students need. Educational standards have continued to increase throughout the years but that does not help the students who are unable to pay for the better education. These students who cannot pay for the better education are stuck barely getting by with a low education. A low-education can affect many areas of regular schooling. The students who are at low-income schools do not know what type of disadvantage they have compared to other students across the country. Low-income students are suffering due to the environment they are in at school and they continue to suffer throughout their life due to it. The right and privilege to higher education in today’s society teeters like the scales of justice. In reading Andrew Delbanco’s, “College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be, it is apparent that Delbanco believes that the main role of college is to accommodate that needs of all students in providing opportunities to discover individual passions and dreams while furthering and enhancing the economic strength of the nation. Additionally, Delbanco also views college as more than just a time to prepare for a job in the future but a way in which students and young adults can prepare for their future lives so they are meaningful and purposeful. Even more important is the role that college will play in helping and guiding students to learn how to accept alternate point of views and the importance that differing views play in a democratic society.
