The Dreadful Cycle of Abuse

About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children. All because the mother or father of that child abused them, creating a dreadful cycle that continues on and on. That is only one side-effect of abuse, so what are some of the others? What are the (long and short term) effects of abuse? Physical effects are the most noticeable effects left by abuse. In the movie A Childs Cry For Help directed by Sander Stern, the young, 8 year old boy, Eric is admitted to the hospital with the complaint of stomach pains. A doctor that was over seeing him calls for a surgery after stating that Eric has appendicitis. Turns out the doctor was wrong, Eric did not have appendicitis, but an inflamed intestine. The mother was the one pushing to have the surgery done, even when the doctor recommends that they wait for observation sake. The mother has Munchausens by Proxy and feeds off the attention from doctors. The surgery was unneeded, and unnecessarily and will only prove to be bad for the child’s health (Stern, 1994). To further extend the thought of abuse having a physical effect, “Child abuse and neglect can have a multitude long term effects on physical health. Researchers found that, at some point during the 3 year following maltreatment investigation, 28 percent of children have chronic health conditions.” (Long-Term Consequences, 2). 28% of children abused end up having a chronic health condition. Examples of chronic health conditions are asthma, cancer, eating disorders, heart disease, and RSD. Not only is there chronic health conditions but there are also traumatic events “causing important regions of the brain to fail to form or grown properly.” (Long-Term Consequences, 3). If the brain fails, it can cause serio... ... middle of paper ... ...s Munchausens by Proxy. At that point, Eric will need to remain in the custody od Social Services while the mothers disease is handled. Eric will have to go through years of his childhood while his mother gets better after having to go through 8 years of his mother abusing him. Abuse has long lasting effects and will stay with you for the rest of your life. “2 adult men came forward in 2011 to report that Millcreek Township man had molested them for long years when they were children.” Years after 2 young men were abused, they come forward with the story, showing how being abused will forever be in the back of your mind, and effect every decision you make for the rest of your life. Abuse effects the victim in many ways from physically to socially, but the worst effect of abuse is that about 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children.
