The Dramatic Impact of Act 3 Scene 5 of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

In act 3 scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare has written a

dramatic and important scene, as this is the beginning of the

breakdown of Juliet. Shakespeare reminds the audience that this is a

romantic tragedy because Romeo has to leave Verona because he kills

JulietÂ’s cousin Tybalt. Juliet is upset because she may never see him

again. This is a turning point in the play.

The structure of the scene is very important. In the beginning of the

scene Romeo and Juliet have just spent the night together to confirm

their marriage in the eyes of God. When Romeo says, I must be gone

and live or stay and die ï€ this shows that Romeo shouldnÂ’t be there

and if he is caught he would be killed because he killed JulietÂ’s

cousin Tybalt and the prince had sent him to exile, however if he was

to return he would be killed.

Shakespeare splits the scene into four parts we know this due to

people entering and exiting from the scene. The first part is when

Romeo and Juliet are in the bedroom. Romeo has to leave because it is

dawn and he would be caught if he didnÂ’t leave. In the second part

Romeo exits the scene and the nurse comes in to warn Juliet that her

mother is coming in her room to see her. When her mother arrives they

talk about Tybalts death and how Lady Capulet wants revenge.

Shall give him such an unaccustomed dram ï€ this shows that lady

Capulet wants to poison Romeo to get her revenge for Romeo killing

Tybalt. Further into the part of the scene Lady Capulet tells Juliet

that Capulet has arranged for her to be married,

because earlier on in the play Capulet told Paris that Juliet wasnÂ’t

old enough to get married and when she did it would be to someone she

loved. The impact this has on the audience is that Capulet cares for
