Oedipus Rex by Sophocles is regarded as a very highly studied Greek play. Even though it was written almost 2500 years ago, it is still widely studied by both students and scholars alike. Oedipus Rex has passed the test of time, because people today can still relate to the themes and feelings experienced by Oedipus in the play. One of the main themes is the downfall of Oedipus and what the cause of this downfall is. The main plot of Oedipus was well known to the Ancient Greeks before it was even written by Sophocles. When Oedipus was born, King Laius and Queen Jocasta received a prophecy about their son (Oedipus Rex 49). It was claimed that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother. To try to prevent this prophecy they gave their son to shepherd to do away with him. However the shepherd did not have the heart to kill the young child and gave him away to a traveler from a distant land (Oedipus Rex 49). Many years later, Oedipus is grown and is told about the prophecy, but still thinks that the King and Queen of Corinth are his true parents. He vows never to return ...
Oedipus the King tells the tragic story of Oedipus and how Oedipus unwittingly fulfills his prophecy. Oedipus prophecy was that he would murder his father and marry his mother. Oedipus grew up in the kingdom of Corinth where he believed that he was the son of the Kings of Corinth; when Oedipus discovered that he is destined to kill his father and marry his mother, Oedipus decides to leave Corinth and try to prevent the prophecy from happening. Unknowingly to him during his escape from his destiny, Oedipus murderers his father and eventually marries his mother and fulfils the prophecy. After reading Oedipus the King I believe that one of the main ideas of Oedipus the King is that Oedipus own tragic flaws lead to the fulfillment of the prophecy and his eventual downfall.
He murders his father and marries his mother unknowingly. While it may seem to some that Oedipus was destined to carry out his fate, it is also true that Oedipus’ personality led him to his fate. It is clear to see that Oedipus is an impulsive and passionate man, which causes Oedipus to fulfill the prophecy that haunts him. He flees the kingdom of Corinthian in order to avoid his fate. Along his journey he comes to a crossroad that is blocked by a chariot, and “in a fit of anger” Oedipus kills the father he never knew (Meyer 1422).
Oedipus’ doom was already predetermined by an Oracle at Delphi before the moment of his birth; thus, despite what choices the people who played a part in his fate made, it became one step closer in bringing about his doom. The prophecy was first given to his parents, Jocasta and Laius, saying that their son was fated to kill his father and marry his mother. This, of course, struck fear into the hearts of Jocasta and Laius. As a result to escape this fate, they had decided to order a henchman to leave the baby on a mountainside with his legs bounded so that he would die of exposure. They believed that their actions of doing so would increase the prophecy not being fulfilled; however, the parents were oblivious at the fact whether or not the baby died or lived. With pity, the henchman instead took the baby to the city of Corinth to be raised under the throne of Polybus and Merope, whom Oedipus grew up thinking he was a legitimate child of. The actions of Laius and Jocasta played the major role in the development of fulfilling the fate prophesied. Laius and Jocasta believed the Oracle, but they had also believed they could control their fate. S...
Oedipus began Oedipus Rex as a king, only to end the tale as a blinded beggar. Oedipus' fall from his kingly status was not by accident or because of some other person. Oedipus is the only one that can be blamed for his misfortune. Oedipus' character traits are shown most clearly during his spiraling downfall, thinking he is "a simple man, who knows nothing", yet knowing more than he realizes by the end of the story.
The tragic beginning for the city of Thebes all begins the day that the prophecy of Oedipus is revealed. According to the prophecy, Oedipus is supposed to assassinate his father and make love with his mother. Knowing this, his father orders to have his son killed but the servant in charge of this duty gives his son to an old man because he pities the young infant. Although Oedipus indeed did commit these atrocious acts he cannot be fully blamed because he did not know the implications of his actions. In fact, could it be Laius and Jocasta’s fault for believing in these prophecies so much that they cursed themselves the day that they ordered Oedipus to be gone and laid upon the city of Thebes a curse which could have been stopped? Taking responsibility for your actions is the right thing to do, however one should not have to pay for the mistakes of others.
The real tragedy is the poor of poverty. Oedipus is one of the classics tragedy character in ancient Greek. Oedipus the king is the story about a man who destined to kill his father and marry his mother. He is the main character as a murder mystery, a political thriller, and a psychological whodunit. Throughout this mythic story of patricide and incest, the author Sophocles emphasizes the irony of a man determined to track down, expose and punish an assassin, who turns out to be himself. Because in ancient Greeks, they believe that their gods decided what happen to everyone and determined what destiny they will have. The free and fate are significant elements of the story concept; however, in Sophocles’s writing, it proved that how human suffering
The play "Oedipus Rex" is a very full and lively one to say the least. Everything a reader could ask for is included in this play. There is excitement, suspense, happiness, sorrow, and much more. Truth is the main theme of the play. Oedipus cannot accept the truth as it comes to him or even where it comes from. He is blinded in his own life, trying to ignore the truth of his life. Oedipus will find out that truth is rock solid. The story is mainly about a young man named Oedipus who is trying to find out more knowledge than he can handle. The story starts off by telling us that Oedipus has seen his moira, his fate, and finds out that in the future he will end up killing his father and marrying his mother. Thinking that his mother and father were Polybos and Merope, the only parents he knew, he ran away from home and went far away so he could change his fate and not end up harming his family. Oedipus will later find out that he cannot change fate because he has no control over it, only the God's can control what happens. Oedipus is a very healthy person with a strong willed mind who will never give up until he gets what he wants. Unfortunately, in this story these will not be good trait to have.
Sophocles, one the most famous ancient Greek playwrights, composed two Greek tragedies that have survived to today. Oedipus the King and Antigone are Sophocles’ most well-known dramas. These two plays emphasize the catastrophic events that take place following a series of incidents and decisions. Throughout the two plays, the audience is continuously uncovering details that will eventually lead to the downfall of the main characters. By comparing the two plays, one can identify similar aspects of the plays that would eventually lead to the characters downfalls.
Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles around 430 BC, is one of, if not the most, important and influential tragedy ever written. It became the base for most of the tragedies written since. In spite of the fact that some of the story line may seem a little out of place now, parallels can be very easily drawn with the present time. Even though it was written over 2000 years ago, Oedipus the King is still fitting and applicable in today's society.
According to Aristotle, the driving force behind tragic works lies not in the development of characters but in the formulation of a specific plot structure. Aristotle believed that the purpose of all art is to imitate life and that human beings live their lives through events and actions. He argues that characters serve to advance the events of the plotline and that the characters themselves are not central. Aristotle's opinions on tragedy were largely constructed around Sophocles' Oedipus the King, which Aristotle called "the perfect tragedy." Considered by many to be one of the greatest plays of all time, Oedipus the King tells how Oedipus, the king of Thebes, comes to realize that he unknowingly killed his father and married his mother and shows the tragic aftermath of this realization.
Oedipus is in a series of tragic events throughout this play. A couple of days after Oedipus was born, he was left on a mountainside to die. The reason for this is because an oracle predicted that he will grow up to be the murderer of his father the King. Oedipus did not die as he should have, instead Oedipus was found and taken to the nearby city of Corinth. This is where Oedipus was adopted as the son of the King and Queen. Many years later, Oedipus seeks counsel from the same oracle that predicted his fate. The oracle does not tell him the identity of his true parents, instead tells him that he would kill his father and marry his mother. To ovoid this prophecy, he ran away from Corinth back to Thebes. Oedipus reaches a place where three roads meet, which is called Davlia. He comes across a chariot that was carrying King Laius. He did not know that this was his father and the King of Thebes. They begin to fight over who has the right to go first, and in self defense he kills King Laius; unknowingly fulfilling part of the prophecy. When he gets closer to Thebes, he is stopped by a Sphinx that has to give everyone that travels to Thebes, a riddle. If the travelers were unable to answer the riddle correctly, they would be eaten by the sphinx. Oedipus was the only one that could answer the riddle correctly. The sphinx was amazed that he answered it correctly, so she threw herself off the cliff and killed herself. The people of Thebes were very grateful, in that sense they appointed Oedipus as King and gave him the recently widowed Jocastas hand in marriage. The people of Thebes believed that the King was murdered while trying to figure out the answer to the Sphinx’s riddle. The second par...

When Oedipus was born he was taken to an Oracle, this was custom for the rich. The Oracle was to tell his fate. The Oracle said that when Oedipus grows up he will marry his mother and he would also kill his father, "... Why, Loxias declared that I should one day marry my own mother, And with my own hands shed my father's bool. Wherefore Corinth I have kept away far, for long years; and prosperd; none the less it is most sweet to see one's parents' face..."(p36 ln1-6).
