LATIN AMERICA
When someone talks about Latin America the first thing that usually comes to head is a beautiful place that is mostly occupied by poor peasant farmers who don’t know much about anything. Maybe the only thing that comes to mind is that its just a nice place to go for vacation, but that is because Latin America is probably unfamiliar to us Americans or we just think we’re to good for them. Whatever the reason being for not knowing much about Latin America is just about to change as well as the way you view Latin America.
Latin America is rather large and kind of difficult to pin point since it starts from Mexico’s border with the United States of America all the way to a small island called Tierra del Fuego, but I can tell you that it’s south of the United States. Latin America also includes all of the Caribbean islands where almost all the countries are suffering of hunger and bad leadership. Brazil and Argentina are two of Latin America’s strongest countries because they make up most of the common market where other nations come to trade, buy goods and buy cash crops. There is a lot of fertile land and plantations in Latin America that produce goods such as sugarcanes and tropical fruits. There are places like mountain ranges where people do live, but eventually have to leave because of the conditions so most of those people end up living in the cities and have to find work which is very hard and leads to poverty in the cities. The cities are one of the weirdest places in Latin America simply because of the people and way of life. In the city you can see Lexus parked right next to a donkey and see a millionaire right next to a woman walking barefoot carrying her child and a bucket on her head. These are everyday life occurrences that give you a clue on how things are in Latin America.
Human Life is actually put second in Latin America to working and because of this there is lack of educational and future opportunities. That is a reason for so many emigrants in the U.S; people see that there is no hope for their children so they save up money and come on boats that will free them from their depression.
Latin America is a dominant Roman Catholic region though Protestants are on the rise.
The soccer controversy dealing with gendered wage gaps only reinforces the idea that gender is a psychologically ingrained social construct instead of an innate quality, especially in a patriarchal society where women oppression is still prevalent (Risman, 1998). As Hope mentions, “this day and age is about equality and about equal pay. We are pushing that and to be treated with respect.” By conveying this statement, Hope and her teammates are not only expressing their concerns about the gendered pay gap in soccer and in other realms of the work field, but they are also illuminating the existence of a pay gap as a larger sociological problem; a problem where a woman makes 76 cents for a man’s dollar (Sklar, 2012). Similar to other sports like basketball and football, soccer is conventionally portrayed as a manly sport with a great amount of physical contact, rigor, sweat, pain, skill, concentration and will.

Venezuela was one of the richest countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: a polarized political environment, a politicized military, drug-related violence along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations that are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.

At the beginning of this course, we read the article Why Latin America? I was not sure that I knew much about Latin American other than the beautiful variety of cultures, the beaches and tourist sites, and the poverty in a lot of areas. I had seen documentaries on immigration and the conditions in some countries of Latin America all throughout high school, but I had never looked into Latin America outside of that class. I felt such a disconnection and while I knew in the back of my head that they were not so different from us, I felt that Americans had developed a lot of harsh feelings towards Latinos American people. Throughout history it is clear that not only women, but both genders have faced seemingly insurmountable barriers when attempting to break into a sport that is not "proper" or stereotypical for their gender to participate in. Though as a society we are making strides towards equality in sport, such as the advent of Title IX, it is clear that we still have a long way to go. Though breakthrough policies such as this are moving in the right direction, other evidence points towards the fact that as a society, we are still more comfortable with women in traditionally female sports such as field hockey as opposed to boxing, and men in traditionally male sports such as body building as opposed to synchronized swimming, since these activities fit with our preconceived notions of what is "normal" for a specific gender. Supporting this idea is the fact that though we seem to be moving towards equality in sport with many coeducational universities and colleges having sport opportunities for both sexes, funding is still extremely unequal, as states by the Women's Sports Foundation in 2001:
Women in sports demand quality assurance for their hard work. Sad to say this is not implemented in the sports “world” of women. “One of the theories behind this is that society doesn’t like to see women in roles that go against the norm of what a woman “should be” (Rodriguez).” Fortunately this stems from ignorance and prejudice beliefs. Especially through the media, both of which can be learned. The media can alter sports viewer’s opinions by relaying positive messages toward women’s sports. As well as sports authoritators distributing equal pay for equal work. The abundant amount of support that the media and viewers allocate will allow a higher amount of equality for women in the sports industry. This kind of support will lead women in sports salaries rise and eventually match the hardship of achievements as a minority in today’s sports
