In America, if asked about Hurricane Sandy, first thought that comes up in one’s mind is the cost behind it and the destruction that is done in New York and New Jersey by Sandy. It is the second most expensive hurricane in the history of United States. Although the super storm Sandy hit the east coast, it still has an impact on the nation as a whole. For example, our economy was greatly affected by Sandy. This deadly and destructive storm has made a living for thousands of people very strenuous. Also, the super storm has caused many small businesses to shut down in the tri-state area. On the other hand, it has caused to show some profits for large business like Home Depot. According to Home Depot’s chief financial officer, the chain generated $242 million in revenue from “storm sales” alone (Maxfield, John). It has far exceeded the $130 million that it earned in the aftermath of 2011’s Hurricane Irene.
Small businesses were already in trouble, but the hardest fear came from losing the electricity. Dairy and other frozen foods products were contaminated and were not sellable to the customers. Also, after the hurricane ended and the owner claimed the insurance for the damaged products, the return was not expected to be that low. Although the gas and electric company gave credit for the days without the service, it did not cover the damages done. Many businesses would still not be up on their feet if the help didn’t come from the US Small Business Association (SBA). Finally, Hurricane Sandy has caused billions of dollars worth of damage and the economy is still affecting the nation. Destruction done by Sandy has made business owners to close down their doors, where they spent most of their life working. It is very sad to lose a business in just days. Furthermore, Hurricane Sandy has made businesses very controversial when it comes to the sales point of view. As mentioned earlier, some businesses were in a great boom, while others were hard hit and forced to shut down. Sandy still has an impact today as some of the agency is still reviewing the loan application and families and businesses recovering.
A lot of homes, businesses, and other places were destroyed. Atlantic city homes were flooded. Many people, not just in New Jersey, had no power for days to weeks. The storms surge made it all the way past the board walk. Hoboken, New Jersey was hit hard. Their homes, businesses, and transportation ways and means were destroyed. Winds there were counter-clockwise making it worse for Hoboken. A lot of New York was hit too. They also had no power for long periods of time. There were a lot of items lost in the flood. Even trucks, cars, and even airplanes. This hurricane has been up to 50 inches of rain. The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, and caused more than 17,000 deaths. Losses are estimated between 70 and 190 billion dollars.
Hurricane Katrina was considered as the worst hurricane in the history of United States. The winds and the rain were shattering people’s homes which collapsed and flooded. Thousands of people were suffering and dying. People were starving, and becoming dehydrated. Many people were left on the street and became homeless. After the hurricane, so many questions were left regarding the widespread damage and loss of loved ones. New Orleans by far felt the biggest effect of Hurricane Katrina. Many people were rescued but had nowhere to go and the government was not prepared for the disaster. There was no plan for recovery. On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina forced its way into New Orleans, Louisiana with winds of more than 140 mph. This storm was a strong category three when it hit New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina destroyed homes, businesses, and factories from the high winds and flooding. The devastation that the city suffered was terrible; many people lost family members young and old and also their most prized possessions. Most of all it displaced families and caused an abundance of damage to properties. Due to the costly destruction that the city of New Orleans faced after Katrina, they must now find a way to alleviate the blighted properties from their environment and also face the challenges.

August 29, 2005 was one of the darkest days for the residents of the State of Louisiana. Katrina, a category 3 hurricane, ripped through New Orleans and the surrounding areas causing catastrophic loss of life and property. The federal government’s disaster response team, which was formed in 1978, titled the Federal Emergency Management Agency, (commonly referred to as FEMA) responded to the needs of the survivors. Unfortunately the Bush administration through FEMA showed gross ineptitude in its response to the disaster. Pre-Katrina the lack of response resulted in a largely unsuccessful evacuation. After the storm, aid to the citizens of New Orleans was slow and inadequate. When we look back at the federal government’s response to Hurricane Katrina, it appears that Bush’s FEMA botched much of the handling of the crisis and that overall, our “administration” could have responded to the situation much better.
While it is rare that we speak of economic events as disasters, I often find myself talking about my hometown of Wilmington, OH as if it has been hit by a hurricane. In May of 2008, DHL Express announced that it would be closing its U.S. air freight hub in Wilmington, and since then, this small Ohio community has been facing an economic crisis of unprecedented proportions.
On early morning of August 29th, 2005 on the Gulf Shore near New Orleans, a devastating hurricane struck. It wrecked havoc, demolishing anything in its path. Leaving nothing but mounds of trash. The surviving people were forced to leave due to massive flooding and the destruction of their homes. New Orleans was not the only place hit by Katrina but it was one of the areas that was hit the hardest. Millions of people were affected by this tragedy and the cost range was up in the billions. Crime rates went up, no one had a place to stay and water was polluted. The damage done by Katrina affected New Orleans and the other areas hit years after it struck. Restoration for the areas hit was going to need support from all of America and support groups across the country. No one was ready for this tragedy or could ever predict the horrible outcome.
Hurricanes occur all over the world, at different times, but commonly through June first and late November. However in late August 2005 a catastrophic hurricane struck. This was Hurricane Katrina. With winds traveling over one hundred miles per hour making it a category five on the Saffir- Simpson Hurricane Scale it was said to have cause billions of dollars’ worth of damage. Hurricane Katrina flooded nearly forty thousand homes, and killed at least two thousand people (“Hurricane”). An average category five hurricane has enough energy to power street lamps for more than twenty seven thousand hours (Williams 58). Knowing about Hurricane Katrina, and the devastation of the city in New Orleans would be beneficial. Also, general information on hurricanes can help civilians and people of higher authority better understand and prepare for damage that could once hit their town and community. Because experts know the general information on these storms they can help explain to the public why and how Hurricane Katrina and other hurricanes occur. Hopefully, in the future civilians will know and use this information to their advantage against hurricanes.
