Many companies wants us to believe that the newest technology gadgets and gizmos will make us happier, but will they? With the advent of modern technology the world is provided with conveniences intended to make life easier. However, with careful scrutiny one can assess that these expedient products and services actually pose new problems. This insight makes clear that conveniences aren’t so beneficial after all. We can note this elucidation in examining the disadvantages of fast-food, automatic teller machines (ATM), and dishwashers. The convenience of fast-food comes along with many drawbacks in its wake. Firstly, fast-food has a detrimental effect on health. Being high in salt, fat, and calories, makes fast-food one of the greatest contributors to obesity in America. Obesity in turn, leads to cardiovascular illnesses, high blood pressure, and disease in joints. In fact, studies show that 13% of the population living in walking distance from a fast-food restaurant has a higher risk of suffering from strokes than those further away. Aside from being unhealthy, eating at fast-food restaurants is disadvantageous financially as well. Although fast-food is considered economical for the individual, it is very expensive for families, as the larger the group, the higher the price. An occasional meal at a fast-food eatery isn’t terribly costly, but frequent outings quickly rake up a large bill. However, despite this awareness, statistics prove that over 50,000,000 Americans still utilize the conveniences of fast-food restaurants, adding up to 110 billion dollars a year spent in such places. Furthermore, fast-food ultimately results in a breakdown within the fortitude of family structure. Traditionally, meal time at home was establishe... ... middle of paper ... ...leaning the dishes. Hand-washing allows one to scrub dishes more meticulously, and removes pieces of food which dishwashers don’t succeed in accomplishing. Therefore, one must re-wash the dirty dishes again, this time by hand, after they emerge from the dishwasher. This results in excessive wasted time instead of saved. Evidently, dishwashers have many unfavorable aspects, despite the benefits they are invented to provide for. To conclude, the seeming conveniences of modern technology create many disadvantages for society. We can understand this concept if we look beyond the facade of convenience of products and services invented to accommodate the current busy lifestyle, such as fast-food, ATM machines, and dishwashers. Therefore, it is important to utilize these innovations with caution in order prevent any problematic outcomes from the negativities involved.
