Murder is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought.” Homicide is a terrifying and troublesome topic to discuss among people, but it is a harsh reality of living in the real world. Many notorious murderers have been introduced within the past few decades, but some of the most notorious murderers in the United States have been John Wayne Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer. While John Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer have very diverse backgrounds and killing techniques from each other, they are still both cold-blooded murderers. For starters, both of the men were surrounded by dark family issues such as divorce or abuse. In addition to that, bullying and consistent isolation at school seemed to have an affect on how these men viewed life. John and Jeffrey had no real chance for happiness due to the constant pressure of family secrets and school troubles. These similarities deem to be important when it comes to perceiving these men as future killers. Tracy was forced into Dahmer’s bedroom with a butcher knife, but he eventually escaped and flagged down police who would arrest Jeffrey. Upon arrival, the police found Polaroid pictures of Jeffrey’s victims as well as skulls and a human heart in his freezer, resulting in his arrest (Jeffrey- Crime Museum). Jeffrey Dahmer was tried in January of 1992, when he was convicted of seventeen murders of different young men. Gacy, born into an abusive environment, was assaulted physically along with his siblings, with a razor strap if they were perceived to have misbehaved by their alcoholic father. In addition, Gacy’s mother was physically abused as well throughout her marriage and during the children’s upbringing. During John Wayne Gacy’s childhood education, he suffered further alienation due to a congenital heart condition that resulted in further feelings of contempt from his father. Furthermore, Gacy eventually came to the realization that he was attracted to men, which caused a great amount of mental turmoil over his sexuality.

He began to boast and embellish the story of what actually happened in that moment. He became seemingly selfish, and self absorbed doing only what would advance him in the society. After the small infraction of lying about this event, he brought John and his mother from their home, only to use them for personal gain and blackmail. These moments reveal that he is not so much about defining himself as an individual but more about conforming. That he did, becoming calculating and cold for self-gain.
John is a very charming character in this story. Although very intellegent John would rather use his intelligence and charm to manipulate people than to do well in school. For Example when John is trying to convince Lorraine to go to Mr. Pignati’s to collect the $10 he says something funny to her that makes here laugh and he responds to that laugh by narrating, “and then I knew I had her where I wanted her.” In this example there is two instances of manipulation, his willingness to manipulate Mr. Pignati for money and Lorraine to help him do so. John Wayne Gacy was born on March 17, 1942. He grew up in a working class neighborhood of Chicago. He was close to his mother, Mayrum, and sister, Karen. His father was a violent alcoholic, who beat Gacy frequently during his violent outbursts. Gacy loved his father despite his violent temper and homophobic nature. Throughout his childhood, Gacy strove to make his stern father proud of him, but seldom received his approval. This friction between father and son was constant throughout his childhood and adolescence.

During Dahmer’s psychiatric evaluation, Dr. Wahlstrom concluded, “Jeffrey was suffering from a mental illness never cured for” (FBI 1992). This leads me to perceive that Dahmer must have been displaying psychotic traits that went unnoticed and undocumented during his early lifetime. I can only speculate that this uncured mental illness lead Dahmer to develop and refine his inability to empathize with society; which in turn, lead him to engage in cruelty without mentally comprehending the victim’s suffering. Murder is considered a serious crime in our country. The loosely defined term of murder implies that a person who kills another human being with intent is known as being the worst kind of violent crime we see in our society. Any unlawful killing requires that a living person be killed and it does not mean that the guilty person feels any hatred or spite in order to plan and execute the act of murder. Moreover, the destructive acts that end peoples lives are classified as homicides which include manslaughter and first and second degree murder. More important, the justice system has put different labels on such crimes, but it also allows room for criminals to get away with murder.
