Although both writers, Alice Munro and Carol Geddes bear some differences during their childhood like: location, society and generation. They shared some values and culture. Mostly important, they shared similar struggles they faced early in life.

Both writers bear some differences during their childhood. Alice Munro, grew up in a farm in Ontario, and Carol Geddes grew up in a small village in Yukon. Growing up in a farm, Alice Munro was exposed to a different life style that most children living in the city might never experience. If being a child in a farm might be hard, being a Native Canadian is an extension of the farm life. But in a whole new level. That was what Carol Geddes went through. In both stories, is clear that the writers have similar point of view and value when it comes to their families. As Carol Geddes described in “Growing up Native”, “That sense of family is the one thing that has survived all incredible difficulties native people have had” (Geddes 88). The same is true about Alice Munro, who had respect and admiration towards her father. “My brother Laird and I sat on the top step and watched [her father]” (Munro 22). Besides the same sense of family, the writers shared same gender which became part of their challenges. Seeing animals, hunting to eat was normal to them. A life style where you respect the Earth because we depend on it to live. It is important to notice that they shared what is a considered good and important values. Perhaps in different magnitude, but still struggles. Carol Geddes, suffered racism, humiliation. She was trying to fit in within the Canadian Culture. As she pointed it out: “We were the butt of jokes because of our secondhand clothes and moose meat sandwiches. We were constantly being rejected.” (Geddes 90). On the other hand, Alice Munro was trying to prove to her family, especially her mother, that she could be more helpful and even being a girl, she could handle the hard work in the farm. She was clearly upset by her mother comments regarding her brother “Wait until Laird gets a little bigger, then you’ll have a real help.” (Munro 26). These type of comments, made the relationship with her mother difficult. And trusting her mother soon would become an issue, to a point where she started seen her as an enemy. “but she was also my enemy” (Munro 27). In addition, both writers faced similar struggles like poverty. Yet, both had the feeling they did not belong to a group. In the case of Carol Geddes, it was the society. In the case of Alice Munro it was her family. It is hard to imagine that at early age they had to deal with all the struggles they went through. But I also believe, that it probably made them better people. Therefore, possible better writers
