The difference between my native culture and American culture Many people moved from their country to another to have a better life, moreover; they would adopt another culture and shifted to new culture. when I first come to the United States, it is hard for me to interact with culture because American culture is different from Ethiopian culture. For some Ethiopian people is easy, they actually adopt American culture. today, it is going to be hard to leave and to come in the United States as immigrant because of the new president of The United States, Donald Trump. There are two differences between Ethiopian and American culture such as, have a right to speak and how they are respect the elders. One of the difference between Ethiopian and …show more content…
In Ethiopia, people respect the elders even if one age of the difference. For example, if you are in the bus or taxi, you should stand up and let the elders have your sit. we also respect elders when we come to the food which is we have to serve first the elders before the children eat. It is a culture to serve the elders first in Ethiopia. When we eat a dinner, first my dad has the plat before everybody and then my mom, my older sister and the last person will be the youngers. In contrast, in American culture, children come first when they serve the food and then the elders. One day I went to one of my friend’s house who have been in America for the past 20 years and they are doing certain thing like American people. The time was late and they ask me to have a dinner with them, and my friend and her family gather to the dinner table and her mom start serving in every plates. She first start severing from myself and my friend, but I refuse her and I tell her to start with her husband. In America, elders do not want to have your sit in bus or train. One day when I was going to work on the train. one women probably, she will be 65 years old come and stand next to me I was sitting on the chair and I ask her to sit. as soon as she saw me standing, she starts saying something that I did not expect. She said, “young lady I can take care myself, I do not need your help”. I feel shock at
Furthermore, people have the urge to better themselves by becoming educated. In doing so they tend to move from one place of residence to another for a variety of reasons. Such as for greener pastures, a sense of adventure, and in the case of some African nations it is because of frustration, as a result of deliberating economy, and others just want to change their lifestyle. However, people tend to struggle when it comes to being culturally fit. Everyone wants to fit in and look the part when it comes to how we dress, look, act, talk and even walk. Culture defines us and defines who you are as a person. Those characteristics are the way people are perceived when it comes to their culture and personality.
It has been said that most people in the world have the same wants, needs and desires. While that is true of people, we still have differences in our back grounds, and in our heritage. We all have a unique culture of understanding. America enjoys these cultural differences, we have embraced them, and it has in many ways enriched this country. There are times however
Hypertension will continue to be a major cause of death all for Americans especially African Americans. Limitations in care for the under-served will continue to be a growing problem. Solutions must be made to provide the delivery of high quality, lower cost and especially effective primary care to the underserved populations.
England created the colonies to generate additional economic value via access to new resources as well as products. However, England did not intend for these dependent colonies to develop an independent mindset. Through exposure to new religious philosophies, the colonies were able to further detach themselves from the Anglican Church. The composition of the colonies was altered by a great influx of culturally diverse people, creating yet another difference from English society. Additionally, the colonies developed a distinct material culture that encouraged them to function as their own economic entity. Tension between the colonies and England, created by religious, cultural, and economic differences, led to the colonies’ development of an American identity.
African students inhabit a unique space within the Black population. While some Africans choose to recognize the differences with African and African American cultures in many aspect so their lives, some decide to fully assimilate into the American culture. My research aims to understand whether or not African students have found that they are effortlessly able to switch between their identity as a black person in America and their identity as an African person. I also hope to understand how the positive and negative stereotypes that are associated with these two categories play a role in the lives of these students. In order to gauge the general sense of how Africans on campus think about their racial identity I will be conducting interviews
The immigrant came to another country with their kid or wife trying give them a better life or attending to change a better job. Even these first generation of immigrants can accept their living environment or job very well, they will still feel unfamiliar about the new world they staying at which reminds me about my aunt and uncle. They have immigrated to America for more than 7 years, got a stable job even their kids. However, when I talked with her about how do they feel about this country, they told me that the culture here is very different from where they came from; therefore, sometimes they had to face some culture shocks. For immigrants , it is difficult to eliminate the sense distance over time because the immigrant have to make compromises
Despite the restrictions imposed by slavery, African Americans have made significant contributions to American culture in music, literature, and cuisine.
Some seasons are being jobless, lack of education, wars in his or her country. People are moving to the USA to improve their life conditions with family and friends. Immigrates are coming from their country to enjoy the freedom in America. . Many people can’t afford to live in Liberia. Africans love America so much, so they try their best to come and live here. America is a free country with a lot of opportunities. My country Liberia was in civil war during the past years so this led many of us immigrating to the United States of America. There are so much good things when living in America such as jobs, money with paying for your school, free public schools for kids and living in a nice and safe environment. Many people do not have these kinds of opportunities in their native country. My favorite thing about living in America is the cultures, food, freedom of speech and learning new things all the
When considering what the African diaspora is, there is one period of time that people commonly refer to. This period of time is the Atlantic Slave Trade. While not the only diaspora of the African people in history, the Atlantic Slave Trade is most commonly thought of due to the scale at which Africans were being emigrated, with around 10-15 million Africans being brought over to the Americas, as well as the effect it has on us today. When looking at the experiences of Africans, they greatly differed dependent on where they landed. These experiences affected later generations of Africans, forcing them to adopt their own culture based on their surroundings and what they were accustomed to from Africa.
The difficulty of moving to a new culture is that a lot of people would feel fear because they are so use to their own culture, so now they leave what they are used to a new way and it will be hard for them to adapt. Some may like the new food and the pace of life, then later on in the month’s people may feel like the new life and culture is unpleasant life for instance: public hygiene, the language barriers, traffic safety, and food accessibility. Still the most part in relocating to a different culture is the communication because they might not understand the language or might say the wrong word thinking it means the same in the other countries. People adjusting to a new culture often feel lonely and homesick because they are not yet used to the new environment and meet people with whom they are not familiar every day.
Most American people I have talk to so far, think that they are different from other people in the world especial people from Africa. They think that if they were to move to Africa, they would have to live a different life style than they are used to, or they simply would not manage to adopt to the “African culture”. Well, for the most part, most of the information the American people have is based on the stereotypes and what the media presents. It is not necessarily correct. Surprisingly, I though life was going to be different before coming to the USA from South Africa. Nonetheless, I would admit that most of Americans would find it hard to adopt to not only some African cultures, but also any other culture outside their country. However, life in South Africa is more similar to the life in the USA than most people expect.

Culture can simply be defined as ‘way of life’ of a group of people. It is about the way groups do things. There can be several ways of thinking about and studying culture. Gail McDonald studied the culture of America through four concepts that include “big, rich, new and free”. (McDonald)For this essay, I would like to define and analyze the American culture in terms of ‘freedom’. I selected this dimension because it has been one of the most distinct dimensions of American culture and it has contributed a lot in making what America is today. It will be interesting to analyze how this cultural dimension has contributed shaping the culture of the United States through the course of time.
What is culture? Culture refers to the cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving
Cultures are a system of knowledge shared by a relatively large group of people. It includes a system of shared beliefs, values, symbols, and behaviors. No two cultures are the same. We are living in a mixed culture setting where a wide variety of nationalities exist together. I interview my friend from class, Cynthia Wilder, who is Jamaican and compared myself to her since I am an Indian. Although Indian and Jamaican cultures are not the same, they share many things in common.
