Does one’s happiness transcend to others and create happiness for society? The concept of Utilitarianism is that of which the average individual must endeavor to obtain maximum happiness by doing whatever means necessary to better the world as a whole. This goal is not only for people of the present but also the future. This goal can come with a lot of skepticism especially from that of common sense morality. These things conflict with one another because although Utilitarianism tries to bring the best out of everybody with happiness; it lacks the self interest for others when making decisions. With no memory a person can become or do whatever he or she wants to with no hindrance from a past life. Any kind of fetters from the life they lived before are gone and they are free to become a new person; A person who is possibly vastly different from his or her prior self. Of course upon waking up the person in question would be surrounded by relatives and dear friends, these relationships, however, would only be ghosts of what they formerly were due to the severe amnesia. Bonds with friends and family are formed through compatibility and shared experiences. With all the bridges of shared experiences burned within the mind of the patient, there would be no relationship. While people can tell someone about all the fun times and experiences they shared with the patient, these things wont be real to them; they’ll just be stories. People are shaped by their beliefs and experiences. With a new set of experiences and beliefs a person becomes someone entirely different. While they still have the same identity, they are inherently different. Secondly, the fact that physically, their entire body is new due to the discarding of old cells and the growth of new ones makes them literally a different person. Someone could say that even if they didn’t wake up with severe amnesia, but they still had a completely new set of cells that they have become a different.
