In group #1 a classmate by the name of Andrew makes an interesting statement which is “In the story “The Devil and Tom Walker” the theme is: civilization is corrupt because of a certain symbol that describes that the trees in the forest are withered to the core.” This is accurate because it shows how people can be rotten to the core and can be miserable and mean. Society can also make mistakes and start corruption by making decisions for their own greedy purposes. Another reason why this statement is true is because it displays that the trees mean age and wisdom over many years but since the trees are withered and rotten, it shows how mankind is corrupted because of the horrible mistakes it creates. This displays humanity’s foolishness because of how man can be easily tempted by certain things which will result in their demise. A great example of this is the story of Adam and Eve. This shows how mankind can easily fall into temptation and sin easily if they are given pleasures and things that are out of their reach and can only be achieved by committing sins. Another situation that shows the foolishness of man is how society can also be fools and trust other so easily. Trusting someone if they do not entirely know them that well, the person can turn on them and can lead the victim into their demise of getting into trouble or to kill them. Also humanity tends to insult others, not knowing what type of consequences they may make because of their words. In this short novel, Fortunato is like society, always getting into trouble because of their foolish ways. He is too trusting of the narrator, which is named Montresor, because of how he is easily drawn into following him into the catacombs. Also, another instance of Fortunato being idiotic is when Fortunato says “ “Enough,” he said, ‘the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough’ ”(Poe 6). This shows how
