Is the idea of the American Dream destroying this generation? Around the 1950’s, the American Dream was defined as “ The set of ideals (Democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity, and equality) in which freedom includes prosperity from hard work”( Wikipedia). However, according to Jack Solomon, author of “Masters and Desire” he believes that the American Dream has two definitions, one that thrives on equality and the other very undemocratic. He disagrees with this definition because he is convinced that equality in this country is a myth. He is trying to explain that the scheme of the Dream now is that people are more focused on boasting their accomplishments rather than preparing for the future. For instance, in the essay “The Semplica-Girl Diaries”, author George Saunders tries to explain this issue. The main character in this story is a middle class man trying to live every day to the fullest, yet is upset because he does not have extravagant luxuries like his neighbors. Instead of focusing on ways to improve his families well being, as the American dream expresses, he wins ten thousand dollars and spends it on decorations and gifts, instead of paying off his bills. He did this so he could throw a party to show off his extravagant new decoration and new wealth to his neighbors. The problem with this is at he was too busy trying to impress people, then trying to do things that will benefit his family later on. He suspects that the Dream has two definitions and that the meaning of the Dream has changed. In this generation, people base their success on having many luxuries and being at the highest position in their field of work. Rather than it’s old simplistic definition of working hard to gain opportunities for their family and live a sustainable life. The new idea of the American Dream is only hurting this generation because it makes people strive for unrealistic goals to only impress the people around them rather than working hard for the family.
